What is the purpose of romantic heartbreak? I've never had a 2nd one. I've
heard that the 2nd ones on aren't as bad.

It might not even be a side-effect, maybe it's just a biological
incentive to stay coupled since that increases the likelihood of
spawning?

One could say that the purpose of feeling bodily pain is your brain
alerting
you of exposure to potential damage. 'Heartbreak' is painful, but not
in quite
the same physical way.

I must have been feeling heartbroken over a once-potential-love-
interest
who's 1000's of miles away for the past week that she's totally done a
sudden and (imo) unnecessary and uncalled for about-face and cut off
communication with me from one albeit happy day to the next.
That feeling sucked, and some 9 years ago, I could not have resisted
the
urge to call, and call, and call again, and text, and email, believing
that I
needed an explanation to move on.

In my mind, she's done this on purpose; it's about testing me, hurting
me,
it's that stupid sick game...
I was feeling terribly dejected about that prospect until I told
myself this:
Trust, Eric. Trust that she really was happy that you had called the
last
time you did speak, trust that even though she's not picking up the
phone,
she really did like you before and wouldn't be doing that if she could
help it.
Trust that she's got more important reasons than testing you, than
hurting
you, simply, than all about you.
And that was it. Every part of the puzzle clicked into place and I
felt better.

And without fail for me so far, feeling heartbroken has always stemmed
from being overly selfish and misconstruing the situation to being
necessarily all about myself.
