First, I've always assumed that an alias, that is, a second account, was
pretty typical for people who ventured into newsgroups and web boards in
which you might want to discuss topics that you wouldn't want to be
discovered by friends, relatives, employers, etc.
This isn't necessarily for sex boards, either. Years ago, I was active
in some political discussion forums, and used to take part in weeks-long
flame wars (apparently I had a lot of free time back then). I remember
some friends searching on my email address, and running across some of
the conversations I had, and asking me about it. Worse, some of the
group members tended to take the arguments offline and send me
threatening emails listing my home address.
It didn't take much imagination to figure out how to use Yahoo, Hotmail,
Gmail, and my own ISP to set up alternate accounts so I could have a
business/personal email, and an online persona email so I could keep
things separate.
After several "oops" moments when I discovered that I used the wrong
account for something or another, I installed different email/usenet
clients so I could keep things separate without having to think about it.
For example, I used Outlook Express for my business email, and one of
the several free/shareware clients for reading the sex newsgroups. That
kept me from accidentally posting to one group under an unintended name.
I've been running Linux for a few years now, and had to switch to a free
Usenet service, since my ISP dropped the newsgroup access. I now use
Thunderbird & Firefox for my personal & business email, and installed
Seamonkey (the old Netscape/Mozilla) for the more interesting reading.
This also manages to keep the kids from stumbling over a site or group
on my PC - not that they normally use it, since we have different
accounts set up, but for the occasional times when I'm working and
somebody bursts into the room with "You gotta check out this awesome
Youtube," or "Can I look something up real quick?" This way it keeps
"Redtube" from dropping down when they're trying to show me the latest
stupid cat video.
Anyway, that's my own solution. What's everybody else doing?

I've never posted my real last name, which is actually a fairly common
one, if you can figure out which of the 8 ways to spell it. Otherwise,
only a few friends call me suzee or suzeeq, and my relatives probably
don't know anything about usenet anyway. But I use an old email address
whose domain no longer exists for posting (the mods know my current one)
in order to cut down on spam or unwanted email.

Now that Forte's Agent allows separate personnae, I have no trouble at
all. I have five of them set up -- this one, for sex groups; one for
argumentative Usenet venues; one for more peaceful Usenet venues; one to
collect commercial notice; and one for my Yahoo groups. Agent keeps
them all separate for me, so there has been nary an "oops".
Now if it could just figure out when a response to a public message was
actually meant to be sent privately ....

Firefox/Seamonkey and Thunderbird (and Outlook, for that matter) all
support multiple profiles. You don't need an entirely different install,
you just have to launch the correct profile. After all, nothing stops
you from accidentally using "Browser A" to access "Resource B" either.
