Seniors with continued access to family are the most fulfilled. Their
big concern is health & finances. It is hepful to have interests that
fill a life that is more limited than the past. I enjoy
painting-discussions ranging from politics to present & past cultures.
We fear the mortal ity that must surely come--some use religion to
combat this fear. others accteptance

Phoebe - I just look at death as a step in life. Nothing that exists
lasts forever. Even the mountains crumble.
What I would like, if I had a choice, is a room to do painting in. Years
ago I tried my hand at oil and water color painting. I was awful. But I
often thought that it would be nice to fill canvasses with whatever. I
don't have the room for all that that would entail.
I tried charcoals, pitifully, but it can be messy without a special room
that nobody minds the dirt in. I thought that Bob Ross was pretty good.
He died quite young. Then, if I remember right, was the older man, Bill
Alexander (?).
Art can be fun. What is that you do?

When I retired I discovered gardening. Found it to be the best hobby
for me... so relaxing. Before retiring I only had time for a very
simple yard .. low maintenance. Now I have quite a few flowers and
shrubs and spend a great deal of my time outdoors "digging in the dirt".

Wheel man.......go ahead, drawing, painting, and create your own style.
- If it gives you joy, relaxation, something to do, that's what is
importend. I watched a women on a mexican beach, day-in and day-out,
with her scetchpad and CRAYONS creating very appealing scenes. Working
with simple clay or woodcarving can be relaxing and fun. And... none of
these take up much space. ..... Erika

Wheel man: Try pastels edged with colored pen in matching or
contrasting colors. Blend the pastels with fingers, small piece of paper
towel, or even a Q-tip. Be as bold as you like, or try delicate
lines-this creates a wonderful effect. I understand there is a spray to
keep the pastel from smudging, but I always used hair spray.

Wheel Man, have you ever tried woodburning? No mess, no big space
required. The tool costs about $15.00 and the wood $2.00 or free if you
find some. I've tried all kinds of animals but the best ones are the
real hairy dark ones, like chimps, gorillas, bears, etc. You can detail
every hair and the end result looks almost 3D. I did a family of chimps
feeding at a termite mound, turned out great. If you are interested let
me know, I'll send you a chimp. Oh, and eagles turn out great too.

Have you tried computer graphics? That is my hobby now and doesn't take up any space except on the hard drive.

Since I found this group, along with a couple of others, I have been
having a ball. Its a lot of fun for me, and I enjoy the thought of being
able to communicate with people from other parts of the world.
I will probably never get to Australia, New Zealand, England and other
countries, but I enjoy doing it vicariously.
I also email a number of my relatives out of state that I have not seen
face to face in years. Maybe the now occasional weddings or wakes. But
now almost daily we share stories and recall the old days when we were
all within a few blocks of each other.
My wife isn't yet into the 'net. She got this Webtv for me as an
interesting, entertaining hobby. And I am glad to have it. So to speak,
I love you all.
For now, I wish you all a happy holiday season and the best of health.
