After waiting for almost a week for some files I had ftp'd, I
recieved
something that contained the file names I requested, e.g. LISTAB,
LISTCF etc., but in no way what-so-ever am I able to read what
appears
to be some undecipherable code from outer space! I thought these
files were supposed to be surnames. Can anyone please explain this
to
me?

Your delivery was probably encoded or compressed, or possibly
both. If the file has a "start" line before the gibberish
starts, then try doing "uudecode filename" to see if you can
decode it. If it is compressed it could be any one of a number
of methods. Common UNIX ones are "uncompress" and "unpack".
