Does anyone have information of descendents of the Parr family? By
family tradition we are related to Catherine Parr, 6th wife of Henry
VIII, via Sir Nicholas Woodhull and Lady Elizabeth Parr (daughter of Sir
William Parr). No dates attached to the above people, or any
information between Sir Nicholas Woodhull and Clementina Woodhull (b
1769), our modern link.

From the Royalty genealogy files I was able to find that Catherine Parr
was married 4 times (Henry VIII was number 3), had one child that didn't
survive, had a brother Marquess William of Northampton Parr, and that
her parents were Sir Thomas of Kendal Parr and Maud Green.

Does anyone have information about the Parrs or Woodhulls, especially in
the period 1500-1780? In one family note I found the statement that the
Woodhulls trace their family to 950 a.d., authenticated to 1147 a.d.

thanks,
aem

As a marquess, William is undoubtedly in Burke's Peerage (look for the
19th-century multi-volume edition in a large library). His
descendants (at least all the titled ones) should be included.

The WOODHULLs should be of interest to many rooters in the U.S., as they
are a well-researched medieval family that is ancestral to Grace CHETWOOD,
who emigrated to New England in 1636 with her husband, the Rev. Peter
BULKELEY, and to George ELKINTON, who emigrated to New Jersey in 1677
and settled in Burlington County. In his 1944 article on the family
[The American Genealogist 21:69], Donald L. Jacobus wrote, "Few English
families have produced so many American colonists, actual, possible, and
alleged, as the family of Woodhull (Odell)."

The best source on the early WOODHULL family is an article by Col.
Charles M. Hansen that appeared in The Genealogist, Vol. 7-8, 1986-7, pp.
4-127. The line is traced from WALTER the FLEMING, who was listed in the
Domesday Book (1086).

Andrew, you expressed particular interest in Sir Nicholas WOODHULL and
his wife Elizabeth PARR, and on the relationship of the latter to
Catherine PARR, 6th wife of HENRY VIII. Elizabeth PARR and Catherine
PARR were first cousins, daughters of Sir William and Sir Thomas PARR,
respectively, who in turn were sons of Sir William PARR (c.
1434-1483/4), K.G., of Kendal, by his second wife, Elizabeth FITZ HUGH.

Sir Nicholas WOODHULL was born about 1482, son of Fulk WOODHULL and Anne
NEWENHAM, and died 6 May 1531, aged 49 years. He was designated "Nicholas
Baron WOODHULL" in the 1566 visitation of co. Oxford. He married (1) in
1507/8 Mary RALEIGH, daughter of Edward RALEIGH, Esq., of Franborough, co.
Warwick. She was on a list of ladies who received "stuff" for gowns and
coats for the coronation of CATHERINE of ARAGON, 24 June 1509. Sir
Nicholas married (2) in 1522/3 Elizabeth PARR, daughter of Sir William
PARR. Sir William had been an "esquire of the body" to Kings HENRY VII
and HENRY VIII. He had tilted against King HENRY VIII at a tournament in
1510. On 23 Dec. 1543, he was created Baron PARR of Horton (in co.
Northampton); at that time he was chamberlain to his niece, Catherine
PARR, last queen of Henry VIII. Sir William died about November 1547,
surviving his wife Elizabeth.

With his first wife, Mary RALEIGH, Sir Nicholas WOODHULL had a daughter
Joyce and a son, Anthony (c. 1517-1541/2), who lived just long enough to
father an heiress, Agnes WOODHULL (b. 1541/2), who married Richard
CHETWODE. With his second wife, Elizabeth PARR, Sir Nicholas had
daughters Mary and Anna and a son, Fulk, born c. 1530. Col. Hansen's
article provides some brief notes on Fulk's immediate descendants, which
include sons Nicholas and John, but does not follow this WOODHULL line
further to link with your Clementina WOODHULL (b. 1769). It does,
however, provide a detailed account of the 16 WOODHULL generations before
Nicholas! You might find more on Fulk's descendants in George Baker's
History and Antiquities of the County of Northampton (2 vols., London,
1822-41).

Once you're able to fill in the roughly 8-generation gap between Fulk
and Clementina <gulp>, Lucy Moye's suggestion that you look at Cokayne's
Complete Peerage is an excellent one. Both PARR women descended from
King EDWARD III, and many of their ancestral lines may be dug out of
Cokayne's 12 volumes.

Happy hunting!
