1664, 27 Sept: Cornelious DEBANY is granted 200 acres and 100 more
are due for transportation of Joane WINTER and Besse, an Indian;
1667/8, 16 Mar: Cornelius DABONY patents (or purchases?) 300 acres
in New Kent Co, S side York R, above Totopotomoyes Cr, beginning at
mouth of same;
1670, Apr 27: Cornelius DABANY's land is adjacent to land of John
FLEMING and Thomas GLASS in New Kent County;
1682, Apr 20: Cornelius DABNEY in New Kent County is adjacent to
land of Gawen GAWIN;
1684, Oct 21 - prior to this (and probably prior to 22 Sept 1682)
Cornelius DABNEY has sold land in New Kent County to David SMITH;

1699: Cornelius DABNEY has leased 600 or 700 acres of land on
Pamunkey Neck from the Pamunkey Indians, possibly he did this in
1679 - unclear; in same document,

of Cornelius, deceased, are assigned 700 acres to which is added
150 acres of Low Land. Patents of April 1701 in Pamunkey Neck, K
& Q Co: James DABNEY: 500 acres, Geo DABNEY: 293 acres; Sarah
DABNEY: 179.2 acres.

1. John Dabney
In 1759 John Dabney, of Hanover, bought from Joel Terrell and David
Lewis four hundred acres, and from Joel Terrell four hundred more,
which included the present Birdwood plantation, and the oldest
tavern perhaps in all the section, called at the time Terrell's
Ordinary.
John soon returned to Hanover.
John having died in the meantime, his trustees sold his land in
1773, six hundred acres of it to James Kerr, and the remainder to
Robert Anderson.
2. William Dabney
In 1764 William Dabney purchased from Archibald Woods four hundred
acres on Mechum's River, above the Depot of that name.
William sold his place in 1768 to William Shelton.
1. William S. Dabney 1813
William S. Dabney married Sarah Watson (of Green Spring, Louisa
County, Virginia.
In 1803 William S. Dabney came to the county, and bought from
William C. Nicholas nearly nine hundred acres on the headwaters of
Ballenger's and Green Creeks, now in the possession of Edward
Coles.
He died in 1813.

William S. Dabney married Susan Gordon.
William S. succeeded his father in possession of the farm. He
was a man of decided efficiency and success, both in his private
business and in matters of public concern. He was appointed a
magistrate in 1835, and entrusted with many affairs of importance
by his brethern of the county bench. His taste was relied on as
well as his judgement. In 1856 when improvements to the courthouse
were contemplated, a plan reported by him was adopted, according to
which the present enclosure and pavements of the Square were made.
In 1846 he purchased Dunlora, Colonel Samuel Carr's old place,
whither he removed, where he died in 1865.
His family had the unusual distinction of having two sons
occupy leading professions in the University of Virginia.
