SEPTS AND ALLIED FAMILIES OF SCOTTISH CLANS

General Note and Disclaimer

The information provided here was obtained from Clan Society
advertisements in the HIGHLANDER Magazine, and is not intended to
be and exhaustive list of all clans, septs or allied families. Nor
is this list to imply that an individual can necessarily claim
clan membership simply because one has a surname that happens to
be a sept of a clan. To determine clan membership eligibility, one
should contact the appropriate clan society ( see the clan society
address list provided in a separate file at the ROOTS-L archive ).
Some surnames listed here may appear in more than one clan, and
this is usually due to marriages. For a more complete listing, see
one of several references on clans and their septs such as Black's
THE SURNAMES OF SCOTLAND and Edward McLysaught's THE SURNAMES OF
IRELAND. Many of the so-called "Scotch Irish" or "Scots Irish"
names will be found in McLysaught; these are names of Scots who
emigrated to Ulster from about 1609 onward beginning with the
reign of King James I and VI.
Another valuable source is TARTAN FOR ME! by Philip D. Smith, Jr.,
copyrighted by the author, 1986, 1207 Cavalier Lane, West Chester,
PA 19380. This reference is intended to suggest the proper tartan
to be worn and lists surnames and the tartan name. In his book,
Smith states:
"In no way should the name-tartan list of TARTAN
FOR ME! be regarded as a definitive list of clan or
family membership. That is quite a different
matter. Clan or family membership comes about
through three means: birth, as generally understood
by having one of the surnames of a clan or family;
marriage, although a woman may choose to wear her
own family tartan [e.g. her father's]; and by
adoption. This last process still exists as
evidenced by recognition of Lord Strathspey in 1977
that the descendants of John More are members of
Clan Grant. More hade been a tenant in Strathspey
before emigrating to North America in the early
1700s."

I always wondered where the Mac Gregors were -- remember Mr. McGregor and
Peter rabbit..
Well, I just found out.. (Shortened from Triadic Origin of the Gregg Family
by Howard T. Dimick, Geneologies of Pennsylvania Families Vol II
Geneological Publishing Co. Baltimore, MD):
0) Early History: The Clan Mac Gregor was founded in the
period AD 750-800 by Gregor Alpin, third son of Alpin, an
early Scottish king. His eldest son, Doungheal Gregor, was
the first Mac Gregor. From its inception the Clan Mac Gregor
was characterized by aggressive personalities and martial
leaders who embroiled them in feuds and forays in the
Highlands. Beginning in 1603 James I of England (IV of
Scotland) attempted to subjugate the Mac Gregors and
proscribed its name. This failing, he issued a commission of
fire and sword against the clan in 1610 and encouraged the
surrounding nobels to undertake its destruction, but he made
no progress. Carrying on the royal feud, Charles I abolished
the clan by an Act of Parliament in 1633 under which it was
not a felony to murder a Mac Gregor, and the name could not
be used in any contract, agreement, or legal undertaking,
and no minister of the gospel could lawfully baptize a baby
in that prohibited name. Thereafter they took on other
names: Gregg, Grieg, Gregory, and even Campbell to conceal
their clan paternity. (Not surprisingly, they joined
Cromwell.)
