GENERATION NO. 1

1. Thomas1 NASH {461}. He married Margery BAKER {460}. She was born
about 1600, in Hertfordshire, ENG, the daughter of Nicholas BAKER
{455} and Mary HODGETTS {454}.
They had 5 children:
2. F i. Mary NASH {459}, born about 1620, in ENG. The
Nash Family (1853), 18. "The wife of
Roger Allen or Alling."
3. M ii. John NASH {458}, born about 1621, in ENG. The
Nash Family (1853), 18. "Called Captain
and Major John Nash."
4. F iii. Sarah NASH {457}, born about 1622, in ENG.
The Nash Family (1853), 18. "The wife of
Robert Talmage."
5. M iv. Joseph NASH {456}, born about 1624, in ENG,
died in Hartford, Hartford, CT. The Nash
Family (1853), 18. "Called Sergeant
Joseph Nash, or Hartford."
+ 6. M v. Timothy NASH {475}, born 1626, died 13 Mar
1699.

Margery died about 1656, in New Haven, New Haven, CT.
The Nash Family (1853), 16-18. "There is no mention of Thomas's
wife except i the seating of the Meeting-House, and then her
Christian name is not given. But from a record of the Baker
family, found in the British Museum, it is highly probable
that her name was Margery and that she was the daughter of
Nicholas Baker of Hertfordshire [immediately north of London],
England. ... Mrs. Margery Nash's death is not recorded, but
must have been between 11 Feb. 1655 and 1 Aug 1657. The Nash
Family, Appendix A. "A book in the British Museum called
'County Genealogies and Pedigrees of Hertfordshire Families,
collected by William Berry' ... leaves scarce a doubt in the
mind of the compiler that the wife of Thomas Nash, the
Emigrant to New Haven, was Margery, daughter of Nicholas
Baker, since we have no record of any other Thomas Nash coming
to New England."
Thomas died 12 May 1658, in New Haven, New Haven, CT.
The Nash Family (1853), 13-18. "On the 26 July 1637, from the Ship
Hector and another not named, a company landed at Boston,
Mass., formed principally by Merchants of London, whose wealth
and standing at home enabled them to come out under more
favourable auspices than any company that had hitherto sought
these shores.... In that company, as is supposed, came Thomas
Nash, with a wife and five children. He was by occupation a
gunsmith, a trade which admitted of an easy transition to that
of blacksmith, thus rendering him doubly useful to a people
whose situation required that both arms and instruments of
husbandry should be kept in repair. In March 1638 the whole
company sailed from Boston and, in about a fortnight, landed
at Quinipac (now New Haven). In November following they
entered into an agreement with Momauguin, the principal chief
of a small tribe of Indians, and his counsellors, for the
purchase of the lands.... Whence he came is not positively
ascertained.... The prevailing tradition, however, is that he
was from Lancaster or Lancashire in England.... There is
reason to believe that he was considerably advanced in years
when he came to this country, as his children were all born in
England (or at least before he emigrated) and his eldest son,
John, was of sufficient age to receive the charge (oath) of a
freeman in April, 1642. In his will, made in 1657, he
expressly mentions his old age. His home-lot [in New Haven]
was on the west side of State Street, about one-third of the
distance from Chapel to Elm Street. The order of births of
children is but conjectural. It is according to the order of
their marriage and birth of their first children."

Hadley, testimony was given that "the
said boy coming riding upon a mare from
pasture, having a long rope fastened
about the mare's neck, & fastened about
the boy's waist, a dog coming out,
frightened the mare, so that the mare
threw the boy & ran away with him,
dragging him about 40 rods, and broke
over five rails, the rails beiong broken
down, he was dragged over them into and
through a narrow gate, into his father's
yard, and died forthwith."

The Nash Family (1853), 28. "Samuel 2nd
appears to have spent his life in Hadley.
As there is no record of his marriage or
allusion to a family, it is probable that
he lived a bachelor. He and Jospeh
inherited the house and home lot of their
father, and are supposed to have carried
on the same trade."
14. Fviii. Hope NASH {466}, born 26 Nov 1670, in Hadley,
Hampshire, MA. The Nash Family (1853),
28. Married Isaac Warner.

her except her death in 1687. Her birth
may have been between those of Daniel and
Ephraim, but it is more probable that she
was the youngest."

Rebekah died 1709.
The Nash Family (1853), 26-27.
Timothy was a Lieut.. Timothy died 13 Mar 1699, in Hadley,
Hampshire, MA.
The Nash Family (1853), 26-28. "Timothy Nash was the youngest son
of Thomas Nash, the emigrant, and was born in England or at
Leyden, Holland, in 1626. The first notice of him in the
records of New Haven appears to be dated 3 Dec. 1645. On 4
March 1654 the "ffreeman's oath" was administered to 29
persons, among whom was Timothy Nash. His marriage and the
births of his two eldest children were recorded in New Haven.
His wife, Rebekah, was the daughter of the Rev. Samuel Stone,
of Hartford. ... Timothy Nash had probably been lured to his
father's vocation, a gunsmith, but like the others, gradually
changed it into that of the ordinary blacksmith, more useful
and more needful to the settlers. He left Hartford with a
group of settlers to settle in Hadley, Mass. His home lot was
on the west side of the main street in the village of Hadley.
He had a very respectable estate in lands at his death, as
appears from his will. He was a useful and respectable
citizen, and held the office of Lieutenant in the militia. He
represented the town of Hadley at the General Court of
Massachusetts in 1690, 1691, and 1695. ... He was called
Lieut. Timothy Nash, of Hadley, Mass."

was an original member of the Congregational Church in that

a member 1 Jan. 1739-40. John Nash was Deacon of that Church
and was evidently one among the first at its organization. He
was, like his father, a Blacksmith. The date of his death is
not known, but it must have been previous to 1778, for in that
yeaar his son David, then living at South Hadley, deeded his

his brothers Jonathan and John. He is properly the head of the
Amherst Branch, and his posterity are now quite numerous."

was often away from home. He lost his sight due to an illness.
He learned to read braille and enjoyed reading Huck Finn,
Paradise Lost, and Paradise Regained, and memorized Milton's
sonnett On His Blindness. John and his son Earle were not
close because of John's travelling and his later illness.

60. Earle10 Edson PURDY {46} [ 12] (John9, Julia8, David7, Joseph6,
Jonathan5, John4, John3, Timothy2, Thomas1) was born 6 Oct 1877, in
Erie, Erie, PA. He married (1) Mabel Irene WILSON {47} 24 Dec
1902. She was born 11 Jun 1881, in Oslo, Norway, the daughter of
Andro WILSON {64} and Britta Christina CARLSON {65}.
They had 4 children:
+ 66. M i. Francis Russell PURDY {34} [ 6], born
8 May 1904, died 1 May 1974.
67. M ii. Kenneth PURDY {1580}, born 1907, in Port Hope,
Ontario, CAN, died 1988. Married twice:
First to Mildred Beerer, and had son Neil
PURDY. Second marriage: name unknown. His
wife Mildred's father owned the
neighborhood grocery store where the
Purdys bought their groceries. Kenneth
worked for the Ward Baking Co. in
Cleveland where he was a district
manager. Harold says he was an alcoholic
and eventually lost his job, his wife and
son. They could not bear his alcoholism.
Kenneth drifted around for a while.
Harold got him a job in Bowling Green,
Ky. Kenneth then moved to Ohio where he
worked at a government hospital called
Apple Creek. There he met his second wife
who was a nurse, but that marriage did
not last long. He died about 1989.
68. F iii. Emma Loraine PURDY {767}, born 1909, died
1916, and was buried in Newcomerstown,
Tuscarawas, OH. Buried in East State
Street Cemetery, Newcomerstown.
69. M iv. Harold John PURDY {1628}, born 1914, in
Newcomerstown, Tuscarawas, Ohio. I
interviewed Harold October 1993 via
phone. Never knew his mother Mabel Wilson
because she was killed in train-car
collision when Harold was only two.
Harold met Virginia Burdette at St.
Albans WV and they married in 1935. They
met at a Baptist student assembly at
Alderson Broadus Collegge. Harold chose
ministry because he was influenced by his
older brother Russell. Harold's first
pastorate was in Clarksburg, WV, then at
Barnes Memorial Baptist Church. then at
First Baptist in Madison, WV. He commuted
from there to the SOuthern Theological
Seminary in Louisville. He attended the
seminary three years. Then pastorate at
Nashville at Belmont Heights Baptist
Church for 13 years. Then at Bowling
Green Ky. at First Baptist Church. Said
he's always been too busy to have any
outside interests or hobbies. Harold has
some family photos and documents. Harold
wanted to serve as a chaplain in WW II
but was turned down because of health. He
had picked up an "amoeba" while traveling
in Syria with Virginia. He and Virginia
were in Europe on a tour at that time.
They left Germany just one week before
Hitler marched into Poland. WW II was a
trying time. "We had several deaths in
our church during the war, with boys
being killed. I conducted two or three
military funerals. The families were
under a lot of stress and strain." Meal
time was one of the big things each day
when Harold was young, living with the
family on Carlisle Street in
Newcomerstown. The family had a two-acre
lot with a barn and other out buildings.
They had cows, hogs, chickens, ducks.
Harold and Russell had a pet duck named
Pete, which would follow him around, and
a dog named Roxie.

Mabel died 21 May 1916, in Newcomerstown, Tuscarawas, OH, and was
buried in Newcomerstown, Tuscarawas, OH.
Mabel and her sister Winnie and brother Frank worked at the
Nicholson File Company in Port Hope, Ontario. There they met
Earle Purdy who had just moved from Meadville, Pa. Mabel
married Earle, and stopped working when the children were
born. Winnie continued to work, even after the family moved to
Newcomerstown. Mabel was killed along with daughter Lorraine
and two others in a train/auto collision in 1916. Buried in
East State Street Cemetery, Newcomerstown. Dates on stone are
1881-1916.
Earle next married (2) Winifred WILSON {815}. She was born 1883,
the daughter of Andro WILSON {64} and Britta Christina CARLSON
{65}. Winifred died 1970, and was buried in Newcomerstown,
Tuscarawas, OH.
She was referred to as "Aunt Winnie." Harold says Earle married
Winnie a year after the death of her sister Mabel, about 1917.
"She is the only mother I remember. She was good to us."
Buried at East State Street Cemetery, Newcomerstown, alongside
her husband, Earle Purdy, and her sister, Mabel.
Earle died 23 May 1943, in Newcomerstown, Tuscarawas, OH, and was
buried in Newcomerstown, Tuscarawas, OH.
Earle served in the Pa. National Guard (15th Pa. Inf.). He was
called up to duty during the Spanish American War. He was
stationed in Georgia where he caught typhoid. He did not go
with his regiment to Cuba. He then returned to Meadville, Pa.
to live with family, then moved to Port Hope, Ont. He had
heard about jobs at the Nicholson File Company there. He met
the Wilson family; Frank Wilson was a manager at the company,
and Frank's sister, Mabel, worked there. Earle married Mabel,
and their first three children were born at Port Hope. Harold
thinks the family probably moved to Newcomerstown about 1911.
Earle became a foreman at the Rex File Co. in Newcomerstown.
He fell victim to a Colorado land fraud; the family made a
down payment on advertised land and moved to Colorado only to
find the land uninhabitable. The family was stranded for a
short time, but Earle found work helping build schools for
Indian children. The family lived in Palisade, Colo. for a
couple of years, and Earle even considered buying a ranch at
one time. The family eventually returned to Newcomerstown.
Earle was active in church, serving as treasurer and Sunday
School Superintendent at the First Baptist Church in
Newcomerstown. In a horrible accident in 1916, Earle's Model
T stalled on train tracks. A train crashed into it, killing
his wife, Mabel, and daughter, Lorraine. Also killed Anna
Wilson and her daughter, Pauline. The family lived in
Cleveland for a while, moving there when Harold was about 11
years old. Russell had already moved to Louisville to attend
the Seminary. Earle married Mabel's sister, Winnie, in 1917,
a year after Mabel died. Earle was a skilled handyman. He
remodeled the family home in Newcomerstown, remodeling it,
adding a cellar, and wiring it for electricity. Harold says
Earle was a great game player and liked checkers and
Parcheesi. He bought a Victrola for the family to play records
on. Earle was a patriotic veteran and took the family to
Fourth of July parades; Harold remembers holding flags and
waving at the passing parades. Earle died at home of a heart
attack at age 65.

66. Francis11 Russell PURDY {34} [ 6] (Earle10, John9, Julia8,
David7, Joseph6, Jonathan5, John4, John3, Timothy2, Thomas1) was born
8 May 1904, in Port Hope, Ontario, CAN. He married Mamie Marie
HALL {39} 7 Nov 1925, in Marietta, Washington, OH. She was born
25 Apr 1901, in Neff Ridge, Washington, OH, the daughter of John
Lee HALL {51} and Bessie Maybelle GRAHAM {52}.
They had 2 children:
+ 70. M i. Francis Russell "Frank" PURDY {1218}, born 19
Dec 1926.
+ 71. F ii. Marian Hazel PURDY {4} [ 3], born 7
Jan 1929.

Francis died 1 May 1974, in Columbus, Franklin, OH, and was buried
in Newcomerstown, Tuscarawas, OH.
Harold remembers Russell in childhood painting with watercolors.
"Russell had no training, but was good. He might have gotten
serious about painting but became engrossed in the ministry
and with his family." Harold says that Russell always seemed
to feel he was called to the ministry from the time he made a
profession of faith at about age 12. He talked about it from
then on. Even before that, he would get Kenneth and Lorraine
and Harold to sit and listen to hik preach. He'd set up a
little pulpit and call hymns and preach to them. Russell's
father Earle was active in the church and pastors would stay
at their home and eat with the family and visit them a lot.
Harold says Russell was a big incluence on him and that Harold
never wanted to do anything but be a minister also. Marie Hall
met Russell shortly after her mother's death. She was
attending the family church, the Lawrence Baptist Church, and
one day she saw a young man teaching the men's group. "There
he was, this young man, and I thought, 'Oh my, a young man.'
After a while Russell knew I had been trying to train for
missionary work or some kind of Christian work, and I think
that made an impression on him. He was only about 20 years
old. We got acquainted and he took me to a meeting or two, and
we started dating."

That is a nice record of the Nash family!

> But from a record of the Baker

Is the British Museum a good place to look for genealogical
material?

My guess would be not unless you thought you had evidence you were a
descendant of one of the rulers of Ancient Egypt! :-) (Their egyptology
collection is superb.)

To be fair, the British Museum building currently also houses much of the
British Library, and that, like any other major library, could well be a
good place to check.

Cheers
