Hello,

I work in an Intensive Care Nursery and would like to try to help the parents
of an adorable little premie discover the meaning of a name that they are
considering giving her. They would like to name her "Nyla" which they
said is Swahili but the dad is adamant about not naming her until they
know what it means. They would hate to have her go through life with a
name that means "smarmy little weasel" or something like that ;-) !

Seriously, they have pretty much decided on a middle name of "Chinasa"
which they said means "God answers prayers" since it is so appropriate in her
case. Their last name has two syllables so the name "Nyla Chinasa ______"
has a very nice ring to it.

If anyone can provide any information I would be most appreciative.

TIA.

Check books in the reference section of your library for books of names
might include African names.

Somewhere, I found the meaning of the name of a slave, "Cuffey"
who was named in a New England will. In African, Cuff means he
was a male child born on Friday.

I'm actually no help at all.

But have you thought of posting to the soc.culture.africa newsgroup?
I've kinda done it with this reply. Hope it helps.

.. Colin.

Nyala is an antelope found in the high remote montains of Ethiopia. There
arn't many left but a game park was established to protect them 20 years
ago.
