I'm posting a query for a friend, can anyone help?

His interest is to learn more about his paternal grandfather, James
SLAVEN. He has found many persons named James SLAVIN or SLAVEN or
SLEVEN in his genealogical search, all gorn 1864-65, the right age to be
his ancestor. But with only one Christian name given, the question has
always been which one is *his* James SLAVEN. He knows quite a bit about
his James SLAVEN, but does not know exactly when and where he was born,
who his parents were, if he had any brothers or sisters, and when and
where he died.

Following is a sketch of what is known about James SLAVEN. He would
appreciate any help from readers of this post.

James SLAVEN was born 1864-65, place uncertain, but possibly Ireland.
He married Louise Augustine THOMAS, a French woman, in Tehran, Persia,
in 1888 (she died in 1931). His father's name also was James and he was
a cartage contractor; her father's name was Eugene THOMAS and he was a
tailor. The James SLAVEN my friend is looking for worked as a newspaper
telegrapher in Tehran 1888-1895 (approx.), and in the same profession in
London, England, in the period 1901-1904.

James and Louise had five children: Francis (called Richard), born 1895
at Boulogne sur Mer, Pas de Calais, France (died 1978, and married to
Helena BRUNE who lived 1897-1990); Marie (called Polly), born 1896,
place unknown (married to Walter AMADON approx. 1918); Frederic, born
1898, place unknown (died 1942, and married to Winnifred nee?); Harry,
born 1901, London, England (died 1990, and married to Elizabeth ALLISON
who lived 1919-1955); Violet, born 1904, London, England. The latest
record he has of James is his listing as "father" on the birth
registration of his daughter Violet. The next record he has is the
passenger list of the ship on which Louise Augustine SLAVEN (nee
THOMAS), listed as a widow, emigrated to Montreal, Canada, with three of
her five children in 1911 (the two youngest children followed later).

If any part of this story strikes a familiar note with anyone from
stories of their own family background, please contact Richard L.

Many thanks,
