I have a green card (it isn't green anymore). I know I'm
theoretically supposed to have it on my person, but the
bloody thing cost $400 when I renewed it this year, so it's
in my safe-deposit box instead. I also have 16 credit cards
and credit-card sized things in my wallet, so the last thing
I need is more stuff in my wallet, particularly since nobody
has ever asked to see my alien registration card except
when I'm crossing the border. And I don't pretend to be
American - in fact I deny it politely but firmly. Even after
60 years though, most people can still detect that I'm not
American. I was chatting with a couple of girls yesterday
when, for "1/2", I said "hawf" instead of the American
"Heyaff", and realized as I said it that would be a tipoff.
I should give straight guys lessons on how to strike up
conversations with girls. I seem to be better at it than
most of them are. There is one drawback though, which
is that I have no ulterior motivation. The girls usually
pick up on that, I think.
