Churches enjoy an especially privileged place in 501(c)(3) non-profits.
They don't even have to file a form 990 tax statement as is required
of other non-profits. That they can get away with almost anything has
attracted a lot of organizations to claim to be churches merely by
stating that they hold regular worship services. It is widely abused!

Which reminds me of an old joke...

Hector operated a small business in his town and was visited by the IRS.
They informed him that the local hospital was operated by the Catholic
church and paid no taxes. The Methodist church owned and operated the
local hotel. The Baptists owned and operated the local lumber company.
The Jews owned and operated the local bank.

They went on to say that Hector had the only business left that could be
taxed and he was now responsible for supporting all local services.

Hector responded, "Please do not lean on my alter!"
