I may have bad information. I was told in another news group that
a barrel of crude oil can be refined into 42 gallons of gasoline.
What is the correct number?

You're not too far off. Strangely enough, a barrel of crude delivers
more than a barrel of finished product. HOWEVER ... one must take out
the amount of crude needed to supply the heat to do the refining, which
is, alas, fairly considerable.

While we're waiting for the good doctor, I should mention that
between the time I went to get a blood test early this morning
and the time when I went to lunch, the price of gas dropped
another three cents.

Before my surgery last December 30th, I was taking 40mg of
Pravachol per day and it seemed to be holding the cholesterol in
check within the acceptable range. After the bypass operation
the doctors wanted to maintain cholesterol at a lower level so
they switched me to 20mg of Zorco for 30 days. The result were
good but the side effects were numerous and uncomfortable. They
then prescribed 10mg of Lipitor for 90 days, which just ended.
The blood test is for cholesterol and to check for temporary
liver damage. The side effects were the same but didn't diminish
with time so I'm going to ask for a return to Pravachol with the
addition of Benechol, a margarine substitute available in the
supermarket. Benechol is a favorite of the rehabilitation center
so they give out a lot of fifty percent off coupons. After the
last treadmill test, they said I didn't have to come back except
for the coupons.
My blood pressure is normal although I'm on a "no added salt"
diet. This means eat normally but don't add salt at the dinner
table unless desperate (for me that's just baked potatoes). The
only other pills I take are 400 units of vitamin E, a generic
multivitamin/mineral, and 83 mg of aspirin per day. Before the
operation I couldn't take that much aspirin without developing
blood blisters but now there are no side effects.

Sorry Bob, but you read more into it than is there. My argument
wasn't about Chicago and Milwaukee, it was about Minnesota.
Currently the lowest price at Super America is 1.319, down from
1.839 a few weeks earlier. If that logic is beyond you, perhaps
you should let someone else present the oil companies' case.
Could that drastic price drop be the result of the EPA waiver to the
reformulated fuel requirements in the midwest that I read was granted
recently? Supposedly the EPA had tacitly acknowledged that the pipeline
break down in Texas that feeds fuel up to the midwest combined with their
latest reformulation mandates was the cause of the price runup. They
supposedly granted a waiver to their latest reformulation rules without
public explanation. Now maybe they are fessing up? Hard to tell. Even harder
to tell what might be going on when there seems to be a personal peeing
contest going on between you and Bob.
Chuck
No Chuck, I'll not let the conservative Republicans and their oil
company masters off the hook. There's been no EPA waiver here.
There has been no shortage of gasoline in this State. The only
waiting lines for gas were at a newly opened Twin Cities suburban
Mobil station where as a promotion they sold gas at 1.04 while
the rest of the State was in the 1.70s. The only company that
does business in Rochester that was possibly effected by the gas
line break was AMOCO (they generally kept their prices a little
higher then the rest). There nothing mysterious here, either the
oil company executives are incredible stupid or they tried to
pull a fast one on a State that they intensely dislike. They
wanted to help their conservative buddies prevent further inroads
from ethanol by blaming the oil price increase on it. All they
did was make the Governor and the DFL mad. The drastic fall was
because the oil companies are fearful of the FTC's headhunting
lawyer and to make amends for shafting their customers. I'm sure
their accountants are working overtime.
I wasn't even addressing your present rant. I was referring back to earlier
discussions.

The day you post anything of marked logic is the day you quote someone else.

The price of regular at Qwik Trip and Holiday is 1.269. How's
that for a quote? That's down 57 cents a gallon from the high of
a few weeks ago. Diesel is down four cents for the same period.
I wonder what will happen when the EPA mandates ethanol blended
diesel, see the ADM Internet site.
