Vaaheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Vaaheguru Ji Ki Fateh!

Bhagat Ravidass ji lived near Kanshi (Kashi, Benaras, India) and was
a contemporary of Bhagat Kabir ji (circa 1450-1500 AD). He was a
shoemaker by profession. With his devotion, he was one with Vaaheguru
and thus saw himself as same:

tohee mohee antar kaisa| kanak kaTak jal tarang jaisa |

He said that the reason for the tribulations of the mortals is 'haumai'
(arrogant pride?) and with devotion to the Guru, this haumai vanishes.
Just as the innumerable waves are but a part of the vast sea, the living
beings are a part of Vaaheguru.

jab ham hote' tab too naahee ab toohee mai naahee|
anl agam jaise' lahr(i) maiyo dadh(i) jal keval jal maahee |
[ soraTh, page 657 GGS]

and those who hanker after things other than Vaaheguru will
waste their time-- this truth from Bhagat Ravidass ji is corroborated
by Kabir ji:

har(i) so heera chhaD(i) kai karah(i) aan kee aas |
te' nar dojak jaahige' sat(i) bhaakhai ravidaas | [page 1377 GGS]

Bhagat Ravidas ji is said to have been born in Benaras in 1377 AD, and
died in the last decade of the 15th century (~1490 AD).

Guru Arjan Dev ji says: "ravidaas dhiaae' prabh aanoop|" -- Ravidass
got out of the material trappings and was so imbued in devotion that
he was one with Vaaheguru.

His name spread quickly and even well known pandits and learned
folks considered it a privilege to learn from Ravidaas ji.

A total of 40 shabads of Ravidass ji, in 16 different raags, are
there in Guru Granth Sahib ji.
