I do not intend to open up a new set of debate with my christian and
Baha'i friends in this newsgroup on the divinity (or manifestations
of God, as claimed by Baha'is) of their respective founders. Because,
such debates are unproductive, and most of all, SRI should not be used
as a public forum for missionary activities. (Both the soc.religion.
christianity and soc.religion.bahai have blocked our articles/questions
to be posted, and I don't see why we should allow their articles, esp. on
doctrinal issues to be posted here. If they have any disagreement with
what I write, they can either send me a personal note or write a
rebuttal in their own newsgroups. Whoever interested can browse these.
Or, they can start a debate in the talk.religion.misc - an unmoderated
newsgroup which serves this purpose adequately.) My main intention
behind writing this article is to show my fellow Muslims that christian
claims of divinity of Messiah within the OT is false and misconstrued.
In order to do that I shall examine two oft-repeated verses (by Trini-
tarians) of the OT: Malachi 3:1 and Psalms 110:1.

The proper translation of the verse from the Hebrew will be:
Behold, I (God) send My messenger, and he shall prepare the way
before Me; and suddenly shall come to His temple the Adon whom
you are seeking, the messenger of the covenant whom ye desire.
Behlod, he comes, says the Lord of Hosts." (Malakhi 3:1)
Note: I have translated YHWH Sabaoth as Lord of Hosts, which is more
appropriate than the KJV (King James Version) or some other christian
translations.
First, we must understand that the above verse (Mal. 3:1) tells us
(if we assume the accuracy of the verse as retaining Prophet Malakhi's
statement verbatim) that YHWH Sabaoth is the speaker, and the believers
are the audience to whom the message is addressed to. The word "Adon"
is used for both human beings and God, just like words lord (Lord),
master (Master), etc., in the English language. There is, therefore,
no reason why the word "Adon" above cannot be applied to a man. As a
matter of fact, the context of the verse fits exactly with such
an interpretation: i.e., it is Adon (lord - a man) who is "suddenly"
coming to the Temple (presumably in Jerusalem), not God (see below).
Next, when we study the verse cautiously, we notice that the messenger
referred to is not an angelic being (here), but a human being. He is
commissioned for "preparing the way" for God. What does this phrase mean?
The Hebrew phrase "u pinna derekh" means to say that the messenger
"will put straight and clear the worship." Surely, this messenger was
not coming to repair or reform a religion for the benefit of a handful
of a people, but to establish a universal religion for all humanity. He is
commissioned to remove all the obstacles in the way between God and His
creatures, so that people would worship God in a clear, straight way.
By so doing, he will bring glory to the name of God (YHWH Sabaoth).
That is what is meant by: he (messenger) shall prepare the way before
Me (God)", not that God HIMSELF is coming down (as mistakenly understood
by the Trinitarians). As you can see, understanding of the precise
Hebrew phrase is sufficient to dismiss the christian claim.
I must, however, admit here that
one of the key problems in understanding this verse is associated with
its ambiguity, as to how many persons are exactly meant, is it one, two
or three? Those who believe that it mentions about one person, maintain
that God's messenger is same as the Adon (lord among the prophets) and
the messenger of the covenant. Those who believe it to mean two persons
(e.g., christians) maintain that the first messenger refers to John
the Baptist (Matt. 11:10) and the second messenger of covenant and Adon
both refer to Jesus. Christian-understanding on this verse is a by-
product of Mark 1:2-3. As such, one is not surprised to find every
christian missionary telling us that John the Baptist was the fore-
runner, or the herald for the coming of their lord, Jesus.
For the sake of argument, let us assume that the verse mentions two persons.
In that case, was John the Baptist the forerunner to Jesus? I don't think so.
The reason behind my assertion is if John the Baptist were indeed the fore-
runner to Jesus, how is it possible that he did not recognise the very
mission of Jesus, even to the last days of his life, e.g., when he was
awaiting death-penalty in the prison (Matt. 11:2)? Why did he have to
send two of his disciples to Jesus asking: "Art thou he that should come
or do we look for another?" "Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and
shew John again those things which ye do hear and see: the blind receive
their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear,
the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them."
(Matt. 11: 3-5) Here, we find Jesus avoiding the question and instead
telling the two that he performed numerous miracles, like many other
prophets of old (e.g., Elijah, Elisha, Jeremiah, etc.). If he indeed was
the last mighty messenger of God, and that he was the one sought by all:
the Ahmad (Himada) of all nations, the Adon amongst the prophets, Jesus
simply could have told these two disciples of the Baptist that he truly
was that person and that they need not look for another. The NT then
presents Jesus eulogizing the Baptist saying: "Among them that are born
of women (does that include Jesus, since he himself was born of
a woman - Mary) there hath NOT risen a GREATER than John the Baptist
(not even Abraham, not even Moses)." (Matt. 11:11) (notes within the
parentheses are mine). We can only question the authenticity of the verse
put into the mouth of Jesus. What qualified the Baptist to be such an
important personality, as claimed by the evangelists? Is it merely for
his supposed recognition of Jesus, a claim which is not supported by the
contradictory statements within the NT itself? Did John prepare the way
for human-god Jesus? No. See below for further proofs. John the Baptist
did not change an iota of the law of Moses, nor added to it. And as to
baptism, it is the old Jewish ma'muditha or ablution. Washing or ablution
cannot be considered a religion or 'the way.' We simply fail to see how
Jesus could have uttered such a thing for John.
Furthermore, the evangelist tells us that Jesus considered the Baptist
to be Elias| (Matt. 11:14) If the Baptist was indeed Elias, why did he
deny that he was not? (John 1:21) This is extremely puzzling to us.
Another strange thing is: the author of the Johnian gospel tells us that
the Baptist even recognised Jesus as the 'lamb of God' (1:29), while the
author(s) of the Mathewan gospel report(s) that the Baptist even did not
recognise the very mission of Jesus. (Matt. 11:2) Whose account is to be
trusted, Matthew's or John's? Were they really the disciples of Jesus,
as claimed by christians? In that case, why do they differ? Who is lying
here? We, Muslims, at least, don't expect either of the prophets of God,
John the Baptist or Jesus, to lie. The alternative seems to be
that one or both the evangelists are lying.
Digression:
==========
The author of the Mathewan gospel would have us believe that Jews of
the first century C.E. expected the coming of Elias before the
appearance of the Messiah. (Matt. 17:10) As an added proof, most
christians try to cite Malachi 4:5-6. A critical examination of the (OT)
TaNaKh does not support this claim. Obviously, they are mistaken, since
the verses merely say that God is going to send the Prophet Elijah (who
is believed to have been ascended ALIVE to heaven) before the Doom's Day
(great and dreadful day of the Lord) in order to turn the hearts of parents
to their children and viceversa (and possibly to taste his own mortality).
The verses neither suggest that Elijah is going to appear before the
Messiah nor that YHWH is Himself coming down on earth (physically).
(Digression ends)
================
It is also expected that John's baptism should continue until the coming
of a great prophet or the Adon among the prophets. If, as claimed in NT,
John did really recognise Jesus as that great Prophet (or Adon), why
did he continue his baptism even upto the very date when he was impriso-
ned? He could have simply joined Jesus and become one of his disciples.
How is it possible that the Baptist saw his Adon, the messenger of
the covenant (as claimed by christians to be Jesus), and even
recognised him as such (as reported in John 1:29-36), and yet, did not
follow and cleave to him? This is utterly ridiculous and incredible.
Why did John's disciples continue to practice baptism for several
centuries even after his death, in the Middle East, esp., Syria, Iran,
Iraq and northern Arabia? Even to this date, there are small remnants of
these people in Iraq and Syria, who claim to be followers of John the
Baptist. (Note: the great majority of John's followers accepted Islam
when Muhammad started his prophethood.) These are the historical facts
that one must honestly ponder about before claiming that the Baptist
recognised the mission of Jesus and was his fore-runner.
My conclusion is: John was not the fore-runner to Jesus, nor was Jesus
the Adon, as prophesied in Malakhi 3:1 (if Jesus was Adon, one would
expect John the Baptist to follow him). The Adon was supposed to baptise
with fire and Holy Spirit, not the usual kind of ma'muditha or ablution
practiced by the Baptist. Yet, we find Jesus and his followers continuing
the same practice. Indeed, Jesus's baptism was no different than John's.
Nor did Jesus bring a universal religion, as prophesied through Malakhi.
Instead, Jesus held on to the old Mosaic laws (Matt. 5:17), and was sent
"only unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel." (Matt. 15:24) Before
I provide an alternative understanding about the identity of the Adon
in Malachi 3:1, let me bring up Psalms 110:1, which is used by
Trinitarian christians to claim that Jesus is the Adon.
Psalms 110:1 (supposed to be the Revelation to Prophet Dawud's (AWS)) says:
"YHWH said unto my Adon, sit at My right until I place thine enemies
a footstool under thy feet."
Again, in my humble opinion, christians are mistaken in understanding
the meaning of this verse. Jesus is not the Adon. My assertion here
is mainly due to the fact that Jesus was known as the 'son of David'
(Matt. 1:1). David himself was a Adon (lord) amongst his people, yet,
he calls this other person as 'my Adon.' Whose servant was he, then?
As a sovereign monarch, he could not have spoken about his forefathers,
Jacob or Abraham, for whom the term "father" would have been more
appropriate. He could NOT have meant his OWN descendants (including Jesus)
for whom, too, the usual term would be "son." There remanins, besides
God (YHWH), no other conceivable being who could be David's Adon (lord),
except the noblest and the highest of all human beings. He ought to be
the BEST of the Prophets/Messengers of God. He must be the bringer of a
universal religion and sought or desired (Ahmad) by all nations, as
prophesied later by the Prophet Haggai (Hagg. 2:7). He must be the Shiloh
(Shiluah, meaning Rasulullah), as prophesied by David's forefather Yaqub
(AWS). (Gen. 49:10) Jacob (Yaqub) told his sons in his death-bed:
"The sceptre shall not depart from Judah (Yahudah), nor a lawgiver
from between his feet, until Shiloh (Rasulullah) come: and unto him
shall the gathering of the people be."
It is clear from the above verse that the sceptre or authority will remain
in the possession of the family of Yahudah as long as Shiloh does not
appear. When he comes, that event will mark the end of Jewish glory,
which so long was upheld by the family of Yahudah. Jesus was from the
family of Judah (Matt. 1:2, Luke 3:33). So, he cannot be the Shiloh as
prophesied by his forefather, Jacob. Still, most christians see this
verse as referring to Jesus. I advise them to study the verse carefully.
When I give something to my son and ask him to take care of it until its
real owner ('to whom it really belongs') comes, do I mean to say that
the item belongs to one of his sons? That would hardly be a natural
understanding. Since in that case, the item will simply remain in the
possession of my family, and will not depart from it. If that would have
been the prophecy, Jacob could have simply said: "The sceptre shall never
depart from Judah." (Note: I am inclined to interpret the term 'sceptre'
here to signify the chain of prophethood with which the bani-Israil were
blessed with. And this is mentioned in several places within the Qur'an.)
I am aware of the fact that christians, like their religious mentors -
Jews, would like to lock up the Mercy of God among the bani-Israel, with
the exclusion of all other races of mankind. This theme is so morally
repugnant, disgusting, corrupt and racially motivating that I fail to see
how a rational human being can ever accept such to be true of our God.
Did not the prophet Hosea himself warn that if the bani-Israel did not
uphold the banner of excellence, piety and decency that God "will
have Mercy upon her that had not obtained mercy; and God will say to
them which were not His people that they are His people; and they will
say: You are my God." (Hos. 2:23)? Did not Jesus himself warn the Jews
of his time by saying: "The Kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and
given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof." (Matt. 21:43)?
Is this not the same message with which all humanity have always been
warned: if you cannot uphold the trust laid on you by God (and accepted
by our forefather, Adam (AWS)), then the trust would be given to one who
truly deserves? Did not Allah (SWT) warn the Arabs of Muhammad's (SAWS)
time that if they fail to uphold the banner of Islam, it would be
given to others? (The entire history of Islam will testify to this fact
how Allah took the banner of Islam away from the Arab Muslims after
the collapse of the Abbasid empire and gave to non-Arabs, who were more
deserving of it. Read also, Dr. Israr Ahmed's "Rise and Fall of the
Muslim Ummah." I shall also encourage my non-Muslim readers, if there
is any, to read the history of Islam and the life of Muhammad (SAWS) and
find out how he singlehandedly transformed the Arab society, once filled
with corruption and decadence, into a society of God-fearing believers,
thus truly establishing the Kingdom of God on earth. See below for some
comments by non-Muslim scholars.)
I, therefore, very strongly believe that the odds against Jesus are too
great for his becoming Adon. My understanding is further collaborated
by a number of statements withing the NT itself. Jesus flatly repudiated
the Jews when he asked them: "How could David call him 'my lord' if he
were his son?" There he gave enough hint to prove that he, who is also
called a son of David, himself could not have been that "lord (Adon)."
(See, Mark 12:35-38, 13:6; Matt. 22:42-46, 24:5; Luke 20:41-47, 9:20-21)
This question of Jesus put the audience (who were brainwashed by corrupt
Pharisees, whom Jesus called as sons of vipers, into beleiving that the
Adon of the Prophets was to be a son of David, hence of bani-Israel,
and not of bani-Ishmael) into silence, for they could find no answer
to it. (Luke 20:41-47) The authors of the NT gospels abruptly cut short
this important subject of discussion. To stop there without a further
explanation was not worthy either of Jesus nor of his questioners. Jesus
was obliged to solve the problem raised by himself when he saw that the
disciples and the hearers were unable to identify the "Adon" (lord).
We simply cannot think of a teacher who, seeing his students
unable to answer his own question, should keep silent, unless he himself
was either ignornant or a malevolent teacher. We don't expect Jesus to
be either of those. The obvious conclusion is the synoptics erased his
remark as to the identity of this Adon. The Gospel of Barnabas, a chris-
tian Apocryphal book, on the other hand, categorically identifies the
Adon as none other than Muhammad (SAWS), a descendant of Ismail (AWS):
".... Whereupon Jesus said: 'Ye deceive yourselves; for David in
spirit calleth him lord, saying thus: "God said to my lord, sit thou
on My right hand until I make thine enemies thy footstool. God shall
send forth thy rod which shall have lordship in the midst of thine
enemies." If the messenger of God whom ye call Messiah were son of
David, how should David call him lord? Believe me, for verily I say
to you, that the *promise was made in Ishmael*, not in Isaac.' There-
upon said the disciples: 'O master, it is thus written in the book of
Moses, that in Isaac was the promise made.' Jesus answered with a
groan: 'It is so written, but Moses wrote it not, nor Joshua, but
rather our rabbins, who fear not God. Verily I say unto you, that if
ye consider the words of the angel Gabriel, ye shall discover the
malice of our scribes and doctors. For the angel said: "Abraham,
all the world shall know how God loveth thee; but how shall the world
know the love that thou bearest to God? Assuredly it is necessary
that thou do something for love of God." Abraham answered: 'Behold
the servant of God, ready to do all that which God shall will."
Then spake God, saying to Abraham: "Take thy son, the firstborn
Ishmael, and come up the mountain to sacrifice him." How is Isaac
firstborn, if when Isaac was born Ishmael was seven years old? ...
I therefore say unto you that the messenger of God is a splendor
that shall give gladness to nearly all that God hath made, for he
is adorned with the spirit of understanding and of counsel, the
spirit of wisdom and might, the spirit of fear and love, the spirit
of prudence and temperance, he is adorned with the spirit of charity
and mercy, the spirit of justice and piety, the spirit of gentleness
and patience, which he hath received from God three times more than
he hath given to all his creatures. O blessed time, when he shall
come to the world| Believe me that I have seen him and have done him
reverence, even as every Prophet hath seen him: seeing that of his
spirit God giveth to them prophecy. And when I saw him my soul was
filled with consolation, saying: "O MUHAMMAD, God be with thee, and
may he make me worthy to untie thy shoe latchet, for obtaining this
I shall be a great Prophet and holy one of God." (Ch. 43-44)
It is clear from the above that Muhammad was the Adon of the Prophets,
whom David, the forefather of Jesus, himself revered as 'lord,' he was
the Messenger of the convent. Among the entire history of mankind, since
the time of Moses there has not been a single person who was a prophet,
a bringer of a new religion- Islam, a book of guidance - the Qur'an, who
established an empire based on pure monotheism and wiped out idolatory
between the plains of the rivers: the Nile to the Tigris, other than
Muhammad Ahmad Mustafa (SAWS). This is therefore no wonder that Michael
Hart ranks him as the most influential person in history, ahead of his
own god - Jesus (Ref: The 100: A ranking of the most influential persons
in history, Hart Pub., N.Y., 1978). Bosworth Smith wrote in his book,
Mohammed and Mohammadanism: "He (Mohammad) was Caesar and Pope in one;
but was Pope without Pope's pretensions, Caesar without the legions of
Caesar: without a standing army, without a bodyguard, without a palace,
without a fixed revenue; if ever any man had the right to say that he
ruled by the right divine, it was Mohammed, for he had all the power
without its instruments and without its supports." (p. 92) Indeed, there
is not a single person who rendered a nobler service in the cause of
Allah and His religion than Muhammad (SAWS).
Muhammad (SAWS), indeed, was the Adon, prophesied by David (110:1) and
Malakhi (3:1). Our understanding is further collaborated by the fact
that he fulfilled the vision of Malakhi by "suddenly" visiting the
Temple in Jerusalem (Al-Aqsaa mosque). And this fact is beautifully
mentioned in the Glorious Qur'an: "Glorified be He (God) Who carried
His servant by night from the Masjid al-Haram (in Makkah) to Masjid
al-Aqsaa (in Jerusalem), the neighborhood whereof We have blessed, that
We might show Our tokens| Lo| He, only He, is the Hearer, the Seer."
(17:1)
This entire episode took place on the night of Me'raj (read the ahadith
on this). Muhammad was accompanied in his night journey by Archangel
Gabriel (Jibril (AWS)). Upon reaching the site of the Temple in Jerusa-
lem, he led the prayers of all the prophets (in spirit), and then took
off for his night journey to the heavens. There has not been a single
more glorious day for the Temple in the service of Allah since the day
it was built. No other soul could have brought such a dignity to the
Temple, other than what was brought by Muhammad Ahmad Mustafa (SAWS),
the best of creation of Allah (see below for hadith).
It is Muhammad (SAWS) who is also prophesied in numerous verses within
the Bible, e.g., Isaiah 21:13-17, 42:10-13; Deut. 33:2 and Jude:21.
If the verses quoted above do not refer to Muhammad (SAWS), then these
prophecies still remain unfulfilled. I shall ask my readers to read
about the life (Seera) of Rasulullah (SAWS) for further proofs. Among
all the children of Adam (AWS) there has never been and there will
never be a greater than Muhammad Ahmad Mustafa (SAWS). With that state-
ment let me quote a few ahadith about Rasulullah (SAWS):
1. Abu Hurayra (R) reports: "I (Muhammad (SAWS)) shall be the leader of
the children of Adam on the Resurrection Day, and the FIRST of those
who come out of the graves, and the FIRST whose intercession will be
accepted." (Muslim)
2. Anas (R) reports: "I shall come to the door of paradise on the Resur-
rection Day and open it. The guard will ask: who are you? I shall reply:
Muhammad. He will say: I have been ordered NOT to open it for ANYBODY
BEFORE you." (Muslim)
3. Anas (R) reports: "I shall be the FIRST intercessor in paradise. NO prophet
out of the prophets will be believed (in their truth) so much as I shall
be believed; and there was a prophet among the prophets who was believed
by only one man out of his people." (Muslim)
4. Jaber (R) reports: ".... and every prophet was sent specially to his
people, but I have been sent to ENTIRE mankind." - (Bukhari, and others)
(See, also, Qur'an 34:28)
5. Abu Hurayra (R) reports: "... I have been sent to the entire creation
and the prophethood came to an end with me." (Muslim) (See, Qur'an 21:107)
6. Abbas (R) reports: "... I am Muhammad, son of Abdullah, son of Abdul
Muttaleb. Allah created creations and made me the BEST of them." (Tirmizi)
7. Abu Hurayra (R) reported that the companions asked Rasullah (SAWS):
when was the prophethood guaranteed to you? He replied: While Adam (AWS)
was in the midst of life and body." (Tirmizi)
8. Abu Sayeed reports: "I shall be the LEADER of the children of Adam
on the Day of Resurrection, and there is no boast; and in my hand will
be the standard of Praise, and there is no boast; and there will be no
prophet on that Day, whether Adam or others besides him, who will not be
under my standard, and I shall be the first of those who will burst out
of the earth, and there is no boast." (Tirmizi)
9. Anas (R) reports: "I shall be the FIRST of men to come out when they
are raised up, and I shall be their LEADER when they will form deputa-
tion and I shall be their SPOKESMAN when they will remain silent, and I
shall give them good news when they will be disappointed. Honor and key
on that Day will be in my hands and I shall be the MOST HONORABLE of the
children of Adam, near my Lord. ...." (Tirmizi, Darimi)
10. Abu Hurayra (R) reports: "I shall be given a dress from the dress of
paradise. Then I shall stand by the RIGHT side of the THRONE. There will
be none among the creatures besides me who will stand in that place."
(Tirmizi)
11. Ubai bin-Kaab (R) reports: "When the Resurrection Day comes, I shall
be the LEADER of the PROPHETS and their SPOKESMAN and one who will
intercede for them without boast." (Tirmizi)
12. Irbad bin-Sariyaah (R) reports: "I have been recorded near Allah as
the SEAL of the Prophets, Adam was then mingled with his dust... I am
the answer to Abraham's prayer and Jesus's gospel (good news)..."
(Sharh'u Sunnat)
13. Ibn-Abbas (R) reports: "Allah, the Almighty, gave excellence of
Muhammad over ALL the prophets and over the dwellers of heaven... And
Allah, the Almighty, said to Muhammad: "And we have not sent thee but
for whole of mankind." So He (Allah) sent him (Muhammad) for the Jinn
and mankind." (Darimi) (See, also Qur'an 34:28)
14. Ibn-Abbas (R) reports: "I shall be the MOST HONORABLE among the
former and later generations and there is no boast." (Tirmizi, Darimi)
I would encourage my readers to read the books of ahadith (including
those compiled by Baihaqi, Ahmad ibn-Hambal) for finding out the status
of our prophet, Muhammad (SAWS).
Allah surely speaks the truth when He says in the Glorious Qur'an:
1. "Those unto whom We (God) gave the Scripture recognise (this
Revelation - Qur'an) as they recognise their sons. And lo| a party
of them knowingly conceal the truth." (2:146)
2. "Those unto whom We (God) gave the Scripture recognise (this
Revelation - Qur'an) as they recognise their sons. (Yet) Those who
ruin their own souls will not believe." (6:20)
3. "And when Eesa (Jesus), son of Maryam, said: O children of Israel|
Behold| I am the messenger of God unto you, confirming that which
was (revealed) before me in the Taurat, and bringing the good tidings
of a messenger who cometh after me, whose name is Ahmad." (61:6)
4. "And lo| it is in the Scriptures of men of old. Is it not a token for
them that the doctors of the children of Israel know it? And if We
had revealed it unto one of any other nation than the Arabs, and he
(Muhammad) had read unto them, they would not have believed in it."
(16:196-199)
May Allah guide us to follow His religion and accept the truth and
nothing but the truth.
Allahumma arenal haqqa haqqan war-zukhna etteba'a
Allahumma arenal batela batelan war-zukhna ijtinaba.
