Assalamu alaikum-
I'm really curious about the crescent and the star symbols and why they are
used. I've seen them used in Islamic magazines, newsletters, they are on
flags such as the Algerian flag and the Pakistani flag. Are these Islamic
symbols?

rap: Wasselam. A businessman would say: I am glad you asked that
question. No, stars are NOT islamic symbols at all ! Actually the
PENTAGRAM, the five-pronged star is a Satanic symbol for Christians who
KNOW what is that symbolism all about. Actually, five pronged-star is a
Free Masonic symbol. It is also ancient Judaic symbol, often found in
Judaic mystic Cabalist ideology/theology, which is considered Witchcraft
by the true Christians, and there is not reason why Muslims would not
think the same. Five pronged star is a Free Masonic symbol, and since
Free Masons are basing their ideology and symbolic mystic ritual on a
lot of Cabbalistic symbolism (i.e. most known branch in the US is
Scottish Rite), that is what they use often. Also, since Free Masons
(who include Zionists) invented Communism, based on British Utopism,
Social Darvinism, Malthusianism, Fabianism, AND Zionism, they employed a
five-pronged star (red or yellow/gold) to be a symbol for COMMUNISM.
Why are those five-pronged stars used on flags of Turkey, Morocco,
Pakistan, etc. etc. ? Because since early 19th Century, via British
(Freemasonic) Empire, all those countries are really a sub-branch of
Free Maonery and not Islam. Turkey, Pakistan, and many other "muslim
countires" are really organized and (covertly or now actually overtly)
run by Free Masons and not Muslims.
Recently a member of MSA (Muslim Student Association) in some American
college designed and proposed MSA symbol to be a five-pronged star! Wow!
How appropriate!
Oddly enough, one could find six-pronged and five-pronged stars in many
drawings from the Middle East, even by Muslims, for centuries. However,
in political, ideological and conspirative meaning, really,
a five-pronged star has the same meaning as the six-pronged star in many
ways. Take it from there ...

They have come to be Islamic symbols, but historically, to my understanding,
they came about many centuries after the Prophet (s.) lived. I think
I read they had their origin in some Turkish symbols, or symbols of
a particular Turkish group or nation, which then came to be associated
with Islam, something like that. I read about this in the Encyclopaedia
Britannica (the article on Islam, probably), which I don't have at hand
at the moment to tell you more. So they do not date from the time of
the Prophet (s.), but came much later.

The crescent is a very old symbol in the Middle East and was used, for example, in the
worship of the goddess Astarte. The Byzantine Empire used the crescent as its main symbol.
The crescent appeared on the army flags of the Ottoman Turks in the middle of the 14th
Century AD and may have been used by them before then. With the establishment of the Ottoman
Empire, the crescent appeared on lots of things, including the tops of minarets of
government-built mosques.
The crescent came to be closely identified with the Empire and with Islam in general, and its
use was picked up by the Empire's successor states and by other predominantly Muslim
countries. It is also used by the Red Crescent organization, the Muslim counterpart of the
Red Cross.

Large events such as Eid are always preceded by the sighting of
the crecscent moon. The Pakistani government took this symbol, and
placed it on it's flag. It has no religious significance, and is not a
satanic symbol, nor a call to all the Free Masons is this world.

Beside this odd use of pentagrams and crescents in the flags of muslim
countries, I would like to draw your attention to another peculiarity.
If you study the flags of Europe and other countries (mostly christian, like US
and Canada), you will find out that the majority of the flags can be sorted into
two categories :
1.flags with THREE colors : symbolizing TRINITY.
2.flags with a cross in them (british flag has two crosses since it's composed
of two original flags -scottish and english- )
Now my point : Look at flags of muslim countries !
Many of them have adopted the THREE color structure symbolizing TRINITY, because
of their former colonizers original flags.
So when somebody talks about colonialism being ended, give her/him a forgiving
smile :)
Well since you brought up the topic of symbolism, would you not agree with me
that if a person wears the cross upside down, or conducts the opposite of the
Catholic mass he/she can be considered anti-Christian? So if a group claims
to be "islamic" but then reverses the direction of the Crescent and Star, would
they not be considered anti-Islamic? This is exactly what the NOI has done.
You can see this blasphemy on their web page:
http://www.afrinet.net:80/~islam/
They have taken the Turkish flag and reversed its direction so that the
Crescent and the Star are pointing to the left instead of right. Hence they
have negated all that the glorious Turkish flag, which has come to be
synonymous with Islam, stands for! Yet you have praised the NOI numerous times
in the past without even once applying your "symbolism" to their flag.
Care to explain this inconsistency?

As the Pakistani gentleman said, Pakistan is not run by Freemasons neither
is Turkiye, The Turkish flag has nothing to do with Freemasonry. The same
Turkish politicians who are openly Freemasons, such as Suleyman Demirel, have
helped Bosnia and are still helping Bosnia, Chechnia, etc.. how do you explain
that?
Also, you praised Hafiz Asad but as every Turk knows, he is the main backer
of the openly communist Kurdish Workers' Party(PKK). Their flag is communist
red, which is different in hue from the red of the Turkish flag, and has a
*huge* yellow star on it. How come you never criticised Syria and Hafiz Asad
even though Syria and PKK's flags both have stars on them and Syria's flag
is tri-colored, probably a legacy of French colonial rule?

No,it should be the three-pronged(symbolizing trinity ?) Bosnian "lilies". :)

Didn't a "falling star", herald the birth of Jesus? Didn't the moon play an
important role in the lives of the pre-Islamic and post-Islamic Arabs? How can
you call the star and crescent "satanic symbols" when they hold such dear
values in the hearts of Muslims and Christians?
Sincerely,

rap: Wasselam. These are non-arguments. One usually makes
an assumption that Internet forum like this SRI is viewed by highly
educated people. It is redundant to even answer this kind of illogical
comnment, that has no connection with my previous arguments. Some people
have to consider studying (even some elementary) Mathematics -- I would
recommend studying even the basics of the "Theory of Sets". Therefore, I
shall repeat once again: ]
Pentagram, five-pronged star, has never been and sohould not be an islamic
symbol. It was perhaps used as decoration (ornament) by Muslims, in some
books or on some frescoes, architectural designs, etc. but, that was
incidental, decorative and not neccessarly ISLAMIC. On the OTHER HAND,
Free Masonery PURPOSEFULLY, DELIBERATELY uses PENTANGLE, PENTAGRAM,
FIVE-PRONGED STAR, with a whole lot of "secret" meanings and RITUAL and
SPIRITUAL importance attached to that particular symbol! OBSERVE the
difference. Five-pronged stars that appeared on "Muslim flags" in
19th and 20th Century are DEFINITELY Freemasonic symbols -- that's
EXACTLY why they were put there -- although most of the people who call
themselves Muslims do not even have a clue about it!
BTW, true symbol of Christianity is FISH ! Yes, the cross is a symbol too, but
some Christians think that fish is more appropriate (more "fundamentalist"?)
> I have seen the Star of David and compass and ruler as symbols of

rap: You got a lot to learn, or are you deluding yourself on purpose ? Star found
on "Muslim" flags is the same star used by Free Masonery/Cabbalism -- and, yes,
that STAR has been PUT THERE for the similar reasons -- by the COLONIAL MASTERS !
> Hammer and sickle are the traditional symbols of Communism.

rap: Hammer and sickle is one symbol. More pronounced symbol (on all
flags and everywhere else) is a five-pronged star. Just a joke:
doesn't sickle look awfully similar to crescent? :-) Ha, ha, ha, just
pulling your leg ...

rap: Yes, it IS a medieval coat of arms! No, it does not represent "Muslims,
Croats, Serbs". Bosnian flag is a flag of Bosnian state from the Medieval dukedom
and kingdom. That time was before Islam. Islam is a Religion, State is a form
of organization, Nation is a group of people with some common characteristics
and interests, etc. etc. In other words, these are separate categories.
Bosnian flag is a Bosnia's coat of arms. Fleur d'lis is an symbol
(lilly flower) that has several connotations. In the case of Bosnia it has
come from south of France and it has been used by Bosnian ruling aristocracy.
[ Bosnian state: Bosnian Dukedom and (later) Kingdom 10th Century C.E. - 1528 C.E.]
Fleur de lis is used by some other purposes. One of them, Catholic, is its use
for the Catholic Order of St. Francis of Asisis -- a saint who founded the order
of Franciscan Monks. Etc.

get up on your hind legs and stop crawling before your master! I am
trying to REMIND you Mr. Gunay that ONCE UPON THE TIME, Turks were a
proud geostrategic force to be reeckoned with -- instead of what we see
today .... no further comment.
Those are not pentagrams, but plain stars. They have been used
for centuries, there is nothing odd about them.

Or the Bosnian flag with THREE flowers.

Actually, it's three crosses, one for Northern Ireland as well.

My country's flag has two colors, which would probably make it a
symbol of Manicheanism by your reasoning.

Or when somebody babbles about pentagrams, sorcery, Freemasonry
and such nonsense.

Each month the crescent moon appears in a different portion of the
so-called celestial sphere. No individual star would appear in any
fixed relationship with the crescent moon, and, for the early
crescent, it is unusual for a star to appear in close proximity,
because the sky at that point is still fairly bright. But occasionally
Venus is visible close to the crescent moon.
Sometimes I think that a bit of astronomy, together with navigation,
should be part of a basic Muslim education.
