in Southern California of the USA, has published on Tuesday March=20

a Cartoon attacking the religion of Islam.
The origin of the cartoon looks like the Miami Herald, a paper published=20

Florida. The cartoon had the heading =93Fidel and Infidel,=94 and shows t=
wo=20
fat, hairy ugly men each with a pat, one resembling Fidel Castro of=20
Cuba,=20
the other figure had a turban written on it =93Islam.=94
Two dialogue boxes are shown and read as follows:
Fidel: =93We blow unarmed civilian aircraft out of the sky with MIG jet=20
fighters.=94
Infidel: (ISLAM): =93BIG DEAL! WE BOMB INNOCENT WOMEN AND

This cartoon has a person with "Islam" on his turban saying:

How ironic.
According to what I read, Hezbollah rockets had killed 0, and
injured 42. Israeli bombs had killed 30 Lebanese, mostly civilians
having nothing to do with Hezbollah, and injured 128.
So who has bombed innocent women and children to smithereens?
Israel has already killed 30 innocents, Hezbollah hasn't killed anyone.
What makes it even sicker is this is clearly part of Shimon Peres's
election campaign. I'm sure that an election is looming in Israel
is not a coincidence. 30 dead Lebanese will help him win the election.

My personal opinion -- and it is no more than that -- is that this
situation has to do with the historic relationship between Judaism and
Christianity and with the historic attitude of the West toward Islam.
The United States is historically, socially, and culturally a
Western civilization, of course. Its majority and dominant religious
focus is at least nominally Christian.
Throughout history, it seems to me that Christians have had a sort
of love-hate relationship with the Jews. On the one hand, Christianity
arose in a Jewish milieu, and Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him) was
himself a Jew. Christianity cannot forget its Jewish roots, including
its acceptance of the Jewish Bible (Old Testament). On the other hand,
Christianity has had an antipathy toward the Jews because of their
refusal to accept Jesus (pbuh) as the Messiah. In a way, the Jews
stand as a sort of an eternal "No" to Christianity.
So Christians have had this sort of love-hate relationship with the
Jews which may have contributed to why the Jews seem to loom larger in
Christian consciousness than their proportionate numbers would tend to
justify. Furthermore, there is sympathy with the Jews over the
Holocaust of World War II, and some Christians, evangelical Protestants
especially, consider that the establishment of the state of Israel may
be the fulfilment of some prophecy. Additionally, as some Christians
pay more attention to the historic roots of Christianity, there is more
awareness of and sensitivity to things Jewish.
There may be other factors involved as well, but the net result
is a certain amount of positive feeling toward the Jews, and the idea
(right or wrong) is that any adverse criticism is tantamount to
anti-Semitism, which is strictly in bad odor.
In contrast, the West has more or less hated and feared Islam
almost since the victory of Charles Martel at the Battle of Poitiers in
732. We could almost say (if we don't try to take it _too_ far) that
Islam has been the only serious adversary to Western Civilization since
Rome defeated the Parthians. (Even Communism was a Western product.)
Muslims are strange people with strange dress, strange languages,
and strange customs. They are probably mostly violent and deceitful
and want to destroy our civilization and everything we hold dear. We
owe them nothing and need not respect their feelings, since they are
the enemy, anyway. Such may be the unspoken attitudes of a lot of
Americans toward Muslims.
Thus the difference in treatment of Jews and Muslims in American
discourse and news media.
