Did any inventive Sufis come to your door and ask you to do Sufism?
The very fact that you did not say Salaam, as has been ordered by the
Prophet, shows that you are not a follower of the Prophet.
Dara
The word Sufi was apparently not used in Muhammad's Day. But Sufi
practices have been detected as approved of in many hadiths as those
hadiths are interpreted by Sufis. Moreover the Sufis will point to
many passage in the Qur'an as supporting Sufi ideas.
Sufi is not a sect. It is a manner of thought and there are a number
of groups (you would call them sects) who follow sufi thoughts without
ever uniting into a single entity. It is no more a sect than Ash'ari
theology or agreeing that the Qur'an is uncreated.
Sufi is like Muslim. Sufis are a subset of Muslims. The set of all
Muslims is nothing more than that. Likewise the set of all Sufis is
nothing more than that.
