=====
Peter Popoff is alive and well, and busy fleecing gullible Canadians.
I caught a glimpse of his television program and he was telling people,
who wanted to lose weight, to write to him for a free booklet on how
Jesus can help them do it. Well, I'm always looking to lose some
pounds, so why not?
I received a little red handkerchief in the mail, accompanied by a
computerized personal letter, saying that if I write my name on the
handkerchief and send it along with $50.00 to Peter, he will bless it
and I will lose weight in Jesus' name. The
devil-that-makes-you-eat-too-much will be expelled. Worse still, Popoff
threatens people by telling them that if they don't return the prayer
handkerchief, they are in serious danger of losing God's blessing.
I am absolutely outraged that this charlatan is preying on the gullible
and weak members of our society. It is extortion! I am sending copies
of his letter to various government agencies, asking why Popoff isn't
charged for outright fraud. If he is allowed to sell trinkets, and get
tax exempt status for it, then anyone should be allowed to do it - under
the fair business act. I don't want to pay 1/3 of my paycheck to a
government that isn't getting ANYTHING from a guy who is selling $50
DOLLAR HANDKERCHIEFS! If his prayers don't bring results, then he should
be prosecuted for fraud.
You have a lot of experience with things like this. Can any of you
think of any laws this guy might be breaking? I want to make an issue
out of this because he's making millions off the back of poor
pensioners. The tax money, that he doesn't collect, could be put to use
building community homes for lonely seniors or providing home-care
nursing for the sick, in place of prayer handkerchiefs. I am so angry
about this, that I can see red.
Peter Popoff has since sent me three letters, each asking for money, of
course. His latest form letter says (this is an exact quote so don't
think I'm making this up.):
"It's 3:00 AM and I've been praying for you. Will you take a step of
faith? Will you obey God? To sow a MIRACLE SEED OF HARVEST send
$41.41. Look at Rev. 14:14-15 I know this is God... it takes Holy
Faith. I know that you may have to take this from your savings or from
some other source ... but remember, God is your true source. Satan
would like nothing better than to see this ministry stopped DEAD.
Remember, "THE SECRET OF DELIVERANCE IS IN INSTANT OBEDIENCE."
I can't think of anything more despicable than threatening gullible
people this way. What I would encourage people to do is to write Peter
Popoff, with a sob story - like they have an incurable disease, or
they're so poor they have to eat dog food - and ask him for help. See
what kind of answer they get. Perhaps P.P. can be charged with
something if his only answer to poverty and disease is to send him
money. If this solution doesn't cure poverty and disease, then
obviously he must be guilty of fraud and false advertising.
This is Canada. I'm sure our laws are similar to other countries' and
I'm sure that you have equally obnoxious evangelist/beggars out there to
pick on.
You can write to P.P. and have him drop his blessings on you at:
Rev. Peter Popoff
P.O. Box 1400, Station U
Toronto, Ontario M8Z 9Z9
If you have any suggestions on how to expose this kind of fraud, they
sure would be appreciated. Thank you for your time and consideration.
