Is anyone else here in the NE US having a hard time finding volunteers? We
had a good crew, but recently, many left - just because they got too busy I
guess, but we need help and can't ever seem to find it.

Best regards,
Joe

Joe,

I'm a youthworker in Southern California and we are having the same problems.
We had a youth staff of eight volunteers a few months ago. Now we have five.
One of them graduated from college and is now teaching High School in the
area, but she is to busy to work with the youth. Another got a job that
interferes with church. And I just haven't seen or been able to get a hold of
the other one.

I've found that my best source for youthworkers is college students at your
local Bible College. We are surrounded by Bible Colleges here and my most
faithfull workers are people who are going to school to be in the ministry.
It's awesome to help prepare them for ministry somewhere else by helping them
to minister here.

I pray that you find some quality volunteers.

Sincerely,

Neb Milbourn

I have discovered the best way to put together a volunteer staff is to set up
a council. I know this sounds really simple but I have a small youth group,
only 35-40 kids and I have 12 volunteers. I turn over an entire facet of the
youth ministry to them. I let them report on how we are doing in their area
of responsibility. For example, One couple is directing fundraising. I don't
even look for fundraising ideas any more. they bring ideas to the council
meeting and we give a thumbs up or down on a particular idea. One couple
enjoy music. They put the music together for our program--I have nothing to
do with that.

I like the idea of going to Bible colleges mentioned earlier, but there are
very few out this way. I'll check into them though.

As for using a youth council. That works great with a group of young people
that are already working on their relationship with God. Our group is 99%
non-Christian and thus we are the workers most of the time.

Physical labor they can do, some minor set-up and break-down and event
organization they can do. Discipling or mentoring is impossible though.

Best regards,
Joe

You don't neccessarily have to go to Bible colleges to find people to help
with your youth group. If you go to any local college, find out when the
Christian groups meet and then go try to talk to people. My youth group had a
couple people from our local university helping some a couple years ago.
They've been talking about finding someone again. I know our youth minister
attends one of the Bible studies on campus, which is a good way for him to
find someone. We also try to get the younger adults at the church involved.
They are young enough to relate to teens, yet old enough that they can be
chaperones for events and to know a bit about what they are talking about.
I hope you find the volunteers you're looking for!

In Christ's love,

Goldfish Girl
