Salvation is by faith alone in Christ alone.
Many profess that, and it is indeed true.
But relatively few actually believe it.
What most really believe is
that salvation is by faith plus repentance,
rather than by faith alone.
They do not realize
that faith plus repentance is not faith alone.
The problem with trusting in repentance for salvation,
rather than just repenting because God said to,
is that all trust must be on Christ alone for salvation
in order for anyone to be saved.
The reason why all trust must be on Christ alone,
once was well known among Protestants,
but the Reformation Gospel
soon became clouded up,
and even more than that,
pushed aside by the popular "gospel" of today,
"salvation" by surrender that saves no one.
But the reason that all trust must be on Christ alone
is so that he reckons his own righteousness
unto us: so that it is as though it were ours,
so that he gives us eternal life.
Christ reckons his own righteousness
to us when he gives us faith to trust him
to be our Righteous Substitute for salvation.
(Romans 1:16-17, Romans 3:21-26,
Romans 4-5, 2 Corinthians 5:19-21,
Preface to Luther's Latin Works)
