Christ gives the faith that causes people
to trust in him alone for their salvation.
Those who have faith in Christ have eternal life.
This is what that faith in Christ believes:

Jesus Christ is the Son of God,
and one God with his Father,
and Jesus came to earth
as our Righteous Substitute
and lived a perfect life for us,
keeping the law of God for us,
and went to the cross for us,
and paid for all our sins
so that he could regard his own righteousness
as though it were ours,
so that he could give us eternal life,
and he died for us, and rose again,
and returned to his Father in heaven.

The core of that faith is:
Christ is our Righteous Substitute
who regards his own righteousness as ours
in order to give us eternal life:

Of righteousness, because I go to my Father,
and ye see me no more;
(John 16:10 KJV)

For therein is the righteousness of God revealed
from faith to faith:
(Romans 1:17)

Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ
unto all and upon all them that believe:
(Romans 3:22)

The Reformers taught that faith in Christ believes that he
rather than us is our righteousness for salvation.
