I have no idea whether or not he was (I believe he's deceased),
but he surely was a pinko, and, I believe, a CPUSA member. He
used to be involved with labor organizing and he hung out with
Woody Guthrie. A model for us all, to be sure.

Will Geer died in 1978. He was indeed a pinko and made several
trips to the Soviet Union in the 1930s. He was hauled before
HUAC in 1951 (I think) and was blacklisted. During his blacklisted
years (1951 to 1965 or so), he opened an outdoor theater in Topanga
Canyon (Theatrum Botanicum, I believe it's called). Geer was a
*notorious* chicken hawk, and I believe he did finally come out.

In fact, he was not only out, but in the book "The Trouble with Harry' a
biography of the Gay Activist Harry Hay, it is mentioned that he was at
one time the love interest of Harry.
>In a speech a few days ago Bush said:
>[He'd like] "to make American families a lot more like the Walton's
> and less like the Simpson's."
>Well I seem to recall that the actor Will Geer, who played Grandpa
>Zeb Walton, has come out and proclaimed he is gay. Is this fact
>or urban legend?
Yes, in fact Grandpa Walton molested John-Boy while Mary-Ellen was
tied up on Grandma Walton's bed. :-):-):-)
Seriously, though, Will Geer has been dead since 1978. Use the past
tense in your statements!
And while I'm at it, if the president wants to beat Bill Clinton, he's going
to have to start running against him and not against Bart Simpson or Murphy
Brown. Of course, I don't mind if he loses. I mind if he wins.

I knew staying home on the weekends and catching up on my reading
would pay off in the end! :-(
According to _The Trouble with Harry Hay_, Hay's biography, Will Geer
was (at the very least) not exactly straight. He was, for a few years
I think, Harry Hay's lover.
Geer later went on to marry a woman, and give the appearance of
het-dom. When he died, Hay attended his funeral and was heard to
remark, in the presence of Geer's widow, "I had him first".
Mrs. Geer, without missing a beat, responded "Yes, but I had him
longest."
Actually, now that I think about it, Bush might well prefer such a
family, in which everyone at least pretended to be straight.

Of course, darlings, we're all mistaken to think that Bush is talking about the
Walton's of Johnboy et al.
He means, much more likely, the Walton's, that fabulous merchant family which
owns WalMart's and which is considered the second wealthiest family in the
world. Valued today at about $28 Billion dollars.
These are his people, not the poor folk of Walton Mountain.
Mike Drayton
Don't know about Geer, but another little amusing tidbit from the
convention: On "Family Values Wednesday", when Barbara and the kids
called George up to join them on the podium, the music being played
was "The Best of Times"(?) from _La Cage aux Folles_!
