MEDIA COVERAGE OF KOSOVO CASUALTIES SHOWS SEXES NOT EQUAL
Rockville, MD -- A recent analysis of media coverage of the Kosovo tragedy =
reveals that male civilian casualties are less newsworthy than female casua=
lties, despite the fact that battle-age civilian males in the Kosovo confli=
ct have been targeted by Serb forces.
Adam Jones, PhD analyzed articles on the Kosovo conflict appearing in seven=
leading newspapers, and found these stories used three methods to downplay=
the gender of the male victims:
1. Reversal: Stories often highlighted female casualties, when men comprise=
d the great majority of victims. For example, one wire service reported in =
1999, "Bosnian forensic teams have exhumed 251 bodies...including 12 women =
and five children." The press release did not indicate the sex of the 93% o=
f the adult male victims.
2. Displacement: Articles refer to the male victims as "ethnic Albanians" o=
r just "bodies," with no mention of their sex.=20
3. Incidentalizing: Coverage does not mention the male sex of the victims u=
ntil the last paragraph, implying the victim's sex is incidental.
The media analysis is reported in the March/April issue of Transitions. Jon=
es is a professor at the Center for Research and Teaching in Economics in M=
exico City, and is executive director of Gendercide Watch.=20
Jones concluded, "male victims of violence are marginalized or `effaced' fr=
om the prevailing media and human-rights discourse."
