Tuesday, May 12, 2009
The Regular and Annual Meetings of the Trustees of the Public
Library of the City of Boston were held on Tuesday, May 12, 2009 at
8:00 a.m., Boston Public Library, McKim Building, Orientation Room,
Copley Square.
Chairman Jeff Rudman welcomed and introduced Ms. Evelyn Arana-
Ortiz, Principal Implementations Project Manager at GE Healthcare -
Business Solutions and Mr. Paul LaCamera, General Manager of WBUR
Boston, as the newest Trustees of the Boston Public Library appointed

by the Honorable Mayor Thomas M. Menino.
The Chairman noted the latest book by National Book Award-
winning author and BPL Trustee James Carroll entitled "Practicing
Catholic".
The Chairman presented Certificates of Appreciation to the
Staff of Grove Hall Branch Library and acknowledged the System-wide
support in recognition of their assistance in making the grand opening
of the Grove Hall Branch Libraries a success, including members of t\
he Systems Department, Facilities, Collection Management, and
Technical Services Department.
President Amy E. Ryan welcomed and introduced Ms. Mary
Flaherty who recently was appointed Human Resources Manger for the
Boston Public Library.
Mr. Scot Colford, Web Services Manager, presented highlights of BPL
Digital Resources initiatives implemented over the past year.
President Ryan provided an overview on the recommended Boston
Public Library City of Boston FY 2010 Operating Budget and FY 2010
preliminary to current Operating Budget Revenue Sources, including
recent developments on reduced funding for the Library of Last Recours
\
e program.
The Board voted to authorize the President, or her designee,
to surplus the Grove Hall Branch Library, 5 Crawford Street,
Dorchester, MA and Mattapan Branch Library, 10 Hazelton Street,
Mattapan, MA from the BPL's care and custody to the City of Boston's
Department \
of Neighborhood Development.
The Board reviewed and approved seven enabling votes
including: "Procurement of Library Books"; Critical Repairs;
Disbursement of Fellowes Athenaeum Trust Funds for the FY 2010
Programmatic Plan; Purchase of an addition to the John Adams
Collection; Engagement of Ci\
tizens Schools Fellow to oversee four key Youth Initiatives;
Compensation Survey relative to the PSA; and Procurement of Services
pertaining to the relocation of Business, Reference, and Associated
Services to Copley Square Library.
The Board discussed and approved six award of contracts
including: Provision of Guard and Patrol Services; Furnishing
Uniforms; Inspection, Testing and Treatment of HVAC, Glycol and Steam
Systems; Window Cleaning; Window Installation and Repairs; and
Inspection, Tes\
ting, and Servicing Elevator Equipment.
New England Pension Consultants representatives presented
recommendations on the Trustees' investment portfolio including a
process for adding further diversification to the Fund.
O'Connor & Drew, Auditors, presented recommendations on the BPL
Management Letter, June 30, 2009.
The Board approved the Minutes for the Trustees' Meeting held
on March 10, 2009 which are posted on the BPL Website at http://www.bpl.org
The Board voted to accept and expand a State Grant totaling
$5,222,907 million for construction of the new Mattapan Branch Library
and voted to rescind the establishment of the Anne and David Bromer
Rare Books Fund on September 13, 2005.
Mr. Brian Clancy, President, Boston Public Library Foundation provided
an overview on fundraising and programmatic initiatives at the
Foundation.
Trustee Donna M. DePrisco presented the Slate of Officers for
FY 2009 - 2010 on behalf of the Trustees' Nominating Committee, and
with no other nominations, on a motion duly made and seconded,
subsequent to a viva voce vote, Trustee Jeffrey B. Rudman was declared
el\
ected Chairman; Trustee A. Raymond Tye was declared Vice Chairman; and
Jamie McGlone was declared elected Clerk to the Trustees.
The Board reviewed and approved a host of enabling votes
pertaining to the ongoing operations of the Library for FY 2010.
President Amy E. Ryan presented the Boston Public Library, Report of
Gifts and Grants, May 1, 2008 - April 30, 2009.
