Origin of turtlenecks

What were the circumstances (time, place, ...) of the
invention of turtle-necked clothing? I haven't researched
this myself yet; the first place I'd look is the *Oxford
English Dictionary*. Anyone know an interesting story
about it?

They began to evolve about 10,000 years ago. All the turtles without
necks could not get their head out of their shell to reach their food and
began to slowly die out. Natural selection soon took over. Gee, I
thought everyone knew this.

The only interesting fact I have about the turtleneck is my son has always
called them frog necks.

Land's End, in one of its catalogue, gave a brief history of the
turtleneck. Winds, sailors, etc. figure prominently. Sorry, don't have
