I'm attempting to document the early presence of Marines of Asian
ancestry or origin. The earliest I know is Wilbur Sze, who was
commissioned a lieutenant in the Marines in 1943.

It's well known that prior to WWII, the Corps excluded "Negroes and
Indians", although some of each had served in the Continental Marines.
Did this exclusion extend to Asians as well? Was there service under
restricted circumstances, such as stewards? Or, as many immigrants
from various places turned up in the Old Corps, did some from Asia
also serve?

I'm grateful for any and all factual or anecdotal information.

I remember seeing an article recently about a Syrian who was in the Marines
in the 1920s. He served mostly as a marksmanship instructor. He shows up for
the Marine Corps Birthday Ball every year at the US Embassy in Syria.
