Does anyone know the members of Rommel's operational staffs in North Afrika
and Normandy. I need the information for a research project. Any
information no matter how little is greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Gen. von Mellethin, author of Panzer Battles, was on Rommels staff in North
Africa.

Adjudant Vice Admiral Ruge (Adm.H.Gr.B) was in 1944 Rommel's Marine adjudant.

I remember reading a description of the relative numbers of Rommel's,
Montgomery's and Eisenhower's staffs in North Africa. The Comparison was that
Rommel operated with a staff of about 20 to 50 men, Montgomery needed around
200 men and Eisenhower used 2,000. I do not recall the relative sizes of the
armies involved except that the Africa Korps or Panzer Army Africa was the
smallest with the VIIIth Army the next and the U.S. Army the largest.

Biographies of Rommel will name several of the staff members.

Both F.W. von Mellenthin's book "Panzer Battles" and Rommel's "The Rommel
Papers" have long sections on the African campaign, and mention a number of
the staff members (von Mellenthin was one of the Panzerarmee Afrika staff
officers).

If memory serves, von Mellenthin (sp?), author of "Panzer Battles" was a
member of Rommel's staff. His book might be a good place to start.

Von Mellenthin's _Panzer Battles_ is by his Chief of Staff in the
AfrikaKorps/PanzerArmeeAfrica days. I believe that he describes others on
the staff. Don't know much about Normandy, though.

The book 'Uniforms, Organization and History of the Afrikakorps' by Bender and
Law has the information you need. Don't know if it's still in print though.

Following Operation "Battleaxe", Rommel became a commander of
Panzergruppe Afrika with DAK as its best element.

Rommel also got a staff:

Chief of staff: General-major Gause

Ia : Oberstleutnant Westphal

Ic: Major von Melenthin

Quartermeister: Major Schleusener (succeded by Major Otto)

Hope this helps!

I am sorry if I am missing something, but a good resource is Hans Von Luck's
book "Panzer Commander." I did not see him listed and writes pretty
extensively about him time under Rommel.
