The following information is from H. T. Lenton, _British Fleet and
Escort Destroyers 1_.
STRONGHOLD, pennant number H.50. An "S" class destroyer, built at
Scotts yard in Greenock, Scotland, and launched 6/5/19.
905 tons, 265 feet long, 26 3/4 feet wide, 16 1/4 feet draft.
Two shafts, 27,000 HP, 36 knots top speed.
Three 4" guns, 1 2pdr AA guns, 4 21" torpedo tubes, when built.
Crew of 90.
STRONGHOLD and two others were converted in 1938-39 to minelayers,
the after gun and torpedo tubes were removed and stowage for 40
mines was fitted.
In 1941, several "S" class were converted to serve as convoy
escorts, with additional AA guns and depth charge mountings
replacing the torpedo tubes and some of the main guns. This may
not have been done to STRONGHOLD, as she was in the Far East
where escorts were not a priority, and surface combat was likely.
STRONGHOLD was sunk, as you know, on 2 March 1942. The action
took place south of Java, and STRONGHOLD was sunk by the gunfire
of Japanese cruisers and destroyers.
