Documentary on "Secrets of the Dead" PBS entitled "Bugging Hitlers
Officers".
MI16 set up several posh estates and place high ranking officers in the
comfort they could never have imagined, except the entire place was
bugged, including the grounds. They captured many private conversations
that led to tactical and strategic advantages for the Allies, but they
also heard the admissions of officers of every rank about what was going
on in terms of how the SS, but especially the Wehrmacht treated
civilians.
It should be noted that at no time were the officers interrogated and
all admissions, which were recorded, were unsolicited. There are over
70,000 pages of transcripts which weren't released until recently
because the brits wanted to keep the info about how they obtained the
info secret. Many officers that would have otherwise been tried for war
crimes were never tried because of this
