Would anyone on this newsgroup happen to know the WW2 Luftwaffe Phonetic
Alphabet, and be willing to share their knowledge. By phonetic alphabet, I
mean, the Luftwaffe equivalent of Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta, Echo, etc.

Thanks,
George Hopp

A marvellous site, with the most complete coverage of phonetic alphabets
you are likely to find anywhere, is at:

http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/users/bck1/phon.full.html

Mr. Picky says: It's "Alfa", not "Alpha". The "Alfa, Bravo, Charlie,
Delta" alphabet was not used in WW2. In 1956 (?) the ICAO introduced
an alphabet remarkably similar to the current NATO one, differing only
in having "Cocoa" for Charlie and "Metro" for Mike.

All the best,

John.

Well, somewhere out there on the net, there seems to be one or more experts on
darn near anything. And, there are experts on phonetic alphabets. You could
consult them.

I have not seen anything complete as old as WW II in German, (in English, the
OED mentions "beer" and "emma" being used in 1891.)

I am going to guess that the WW II German one was something like the one from
1965 given below:

Anton Berta Caesar Dora Emil Friedrich Gustav Heinrich Ida
Julius Karl Ludwig Martha Nordpol Otto Paula Quelle Richard
Siegfried Theodor Ulrich Viktor Wilhelm Xanthippe Ypsilon
Zeppelin

but, I can't find enough gun turrets, or airplane models, to confirm more than
"Gustav" or so.

The following is a periodic posting from the guys that know with everything
they had on German. From this, and using Deja News, you could find out more, or
ask the mavens.

Here is one German phonetic version used by German speaking Dutch
conscripts at Soesterberg Air Base (near Utrecht) circa 1942. It's taken
from a ground observer's guide for directing antiaircraft fire and fighter
intercept. Note the spelling of some names has been "hollanized."

Hope it helps,
