Rocket attack 72 redhorse compound DaNang
« on: August 24, 2009, 08:06:45 pm »

Does anyone remember the date of the rocket attack at DaNang in 72 that
hit the compound, I was on duty with one other airman and I can not
remember his name.
Any information would help.

DANANG, RVN got hit 26 times during the year 1972. If you will be more
specific I might have this info. Like what months are you looking for
that year. I left there in July 1972. Worked the BDRT as team leader.

Wayland,
I wish I could remember it is sort of fuzzy I believe it was around that
time not really sure. I was on guard duty at the compound at the time of
the attack, it put a hole in the commanders wall to his office and left
shrapnel in his chair.
Previously we had a base alert and we all went to our assigned holes,
one of the sgt's went off and pointed a pistol at one of the airman I
stepped in and removed the pistol.

April 16 1972 0116 hrs 20 rounds hit the base
April 24 1972 0149 hrs 13 rounds hit the base
April 25 1972 2300 hrs 6 rounds hit the base
May 7 1972 0318 hrs 16 rounds hit the base
May 12 1972 0157 hrs 18 rounds hit the base
May 14 1972 0149 hrs 18 rounds hit the base
June 10 1972 0224 hrs 8 rounds hit the base
June 13 1972 2321 hrs 6 rounds hit the base
June 17 1972 0045 hrs 4 rounds hit the base

Sept. 23 1972 0500 hrs 27 rounds hit the base
Sept. 27 1972 1845 hrs 5 rounds hit the base
Oct. 25 1972 0307 hrs 18 rounds hit the base
Oct 28 1972 0302 hrs 27 rounds hit the base

There were 4 personnel KIA with these 26 attacks on DaNang AB

You can see why it was called "Rocket City."
That year the BDRT responded 15 times before I departed for Thailand.
Was honored as a 366th TFW "GUNFIGHTERS OF DANANG" presented with a
membership certificate by the Wing commander.
Choose any of the Yr. 1972 attacks they all were serious business. Six
of the South Korean civilian employees that took over the Bomb Damage
Repair Team got killed another rocket hit the crater that they were
repairing from a previous hit, and the American civilian (ex Marine) he
got shrapnel near his heart. I was gone only two weeks when this
happened. I had a team of 12 military personnel out there, a close one
it could have been us?Huh

Wayland,
Thank you I can really use this information, someone ask what stress we
were under this basically answers the question. Now I just have to sort
out and remember the month and day I came close. I filled and repaired
much of the damage along with my crew and others.
Thanks again

Wayland, where do you come by such detailed info? Care to share with a
Vietnam history buff? Smiley

Wayland is their some place that we can verify the rocket attacks in 72
that you have listed? I remember I game back from TDY to DaNang they
didn't have a place for me in Camp Swampy so they housed me on the
Transportation side of the base It
was me and another person, who I can't remember. What I do remember is the
hooche we were in had two high 55gal.drums around it for revetments but
the only thing in those drums was air no sand.During my time in that
hooche we had more than one rocket attack. The one that stands out in my
mind is the night of an attack that a rocket landed in back of the
hooche on the other side of a conex box that was back there. The
concussion from the rocket blew both doors open and the way they use to
walk them in we were praying that the next one or how many ever would
not hit the hooche.I still remember the sirens and "This is the 366th
Command Post DaNang air base is under attack" usually we had already
taken a couple of rockets before the announcement.

Then when we was landing we took on 5 more hitting all around us it would of only took one hit in front. All this happened May 30th around 0330 A.M.1972. I was from 3rd FSR camp foster and we had two trucks for VNMC. I seen this in a pdf or a file they was talking about it. I lost the paper on it now I can't find it and your list doesn't show it on your tables. Someone has been messing this all up and archives don't even mention it they cut everyone out at 1969 that's not right our history mattered too but there's nothing about my flight or it's just me trying to hard but all that happened in Da Nang MAY 30th 1972 my contact # viper...@gmail.com

Fuck yeah, I do! In the aftermath of that sneaky gook attack, Your Colonel and his twin 50s went out gook huntin'.
I sanctioned a dozen or so before breakfast that morning.

Viperman is probably not a real Nam vet like you are, Colonel.
He seems to think there was only one rocket attack at Da Nang
in 1972. Since you were there, Colonel, you can verify that
there were no fewer than 26 rocket attacks on the Da Nang air
base carried out by the communists during 1972.

Thank you for plugging every communist in your 50 caliber sights.

White Men like you are the reason America is so great.

I voted Trump and every other Republican about
three weeks ago with an absentee ballot.

Gotta keep that communist nigger who is under
FBI investigation for criminal doings from becoming
Florida's next governor. The asshole wants to
put in a state income tax, collect all guns in
private hands, Medicare for all, open borders.

You know everything that is UNAMERICAN!

I was in Danang at XXIV, but not that day. By '72, I was back on the
streets and fucking like a bunny.
