I am writing this letter to request some help in identifying a World War
Two German Paratroop Rifle, an FG42. The particular rifle in question has
the Rheinmetall stamp and the markings G450 06, as shown on the attached
drawing. The 06 would appear to be the serial number as it is also found
on the bolt, barrel, sear and receiver. The butt, which is of smooth
aluminium, has the number 02 stamped on it.
From descriptions in "Death from Above" by Thomas B Dugelby and Blake
Stevens, it would appear to be an early prototype LC-6 (Type "C"). It has
the five position rotary rear sight, a two piece muzzle brake (although the
flash eliminator is missing), and the swept back pistol grip. The sear has
no bush and is simply drilled to a larger diameter than the axis pin to
allow for its' lateral movement in changing from closed bolt semi-auto, to
open bolt fully automatic fire.
Unfortunately it is currently missing the following parts:
return spring ,
guide rod,
buffer,
fore grip,
cocking handle,
bayonet,
flash suppressor,
split pin / bushings for trigger mech, and
change lever.
The weapon is currently part of a collection used in the instruction of
small arms principles to Armourers in the Australian Army. Any help in
this matter would be greatly appreciated.
Please do not hesitate to contact me.
Tom.
