There is a common denier story that started after the war that the U.S.
built the crematoria after the war. I have Marcuse's book on
the history of Dachau and it was the usual 'we didn't do that' denial.
In fact there were gas chambers at Dachau, and there were gassings
there. But it wasn't a deathcamp. There were quite a few executions
of Soviet POW's at a nearby SS shooting range, however.

Normally the concentration camps were not extermination camps. There were
many times more 'labor camps' than the few deathcamps.
Treblinka, Sobibor, and others were deathcamps. Auschwitz was both a
labor camp (Buna, for example) and a deathcamp. It was an exception.
The vast majority of camps were labor camps. People still died there,
or course. But the trainloads of Jews and others who were gassed
went to only a few camps.

The gas-chamber/crematorium also had the chambers for disinfecting
clothes. I mean, you can see them in photos on Matt's page. But
Marcuse claims the gas chamber was only used for trials, and points
out the sign saying 'the chamber was never used -- disguised as showers'
is incorrect.

We have better knowledge of the camps now. How hard is that to realize?
I doubt there ever WERE 400,000 people in Dachau; I understood the number
to be more around 250,000 or less.

These are ghastly reminders of the Holocaust, as was
the film sequence in _Judgment at Nurnberg_ shown
by the Richard Widmark character.
But can you show that they are any less irrelevant to
the case of Matt Giwer than they were to the case
of the main defendant [Ernst Janning, IIRC] in that film?
