Just because there's no harm in trying ...

Has anyone ever encountered any focused surveys or studies of the
depiction of shepherds in medieval and Renaissance art? I'm looking at
a particular dress accessory that shows up in 15-16th c. depictions of
shepherds in north-western Europe, and it would certainly make my job
easier if someone else has already put my source-material together in
one place!

No but I'd be very interested too.

Yesterday I found a reference to 'Sheep and Man' (pub. Duckworth 1985, £55)
which covers man's association with sheep from 10,000 BC. The author, Dr
MLRyder, includes much original research using wool remains in ancient
cloth, the pastoral tradition of shepherding and very many illustrations,
ancient and modern.

I want it!
