Why is Da Vinci famous?

I wonder how Da Vinci became so famous? Was he always famous?

He finished few works of art (try to name four, not counting sketches).
Most of his product is in the form sketches and notebooks.

I think he could easily have become obscure.

Maybe he is famous due to the romantic history of the Mona Lisa?

He was famous in his own life time for his numerous works of art and as an
engineer but much of what he is famous for now he was careful not share
during his own lifetime.
