Cecil Clementi, Government Secretary of British Guiana and later Governor of
Hong Kong wrote in his 1915 book "The Chinese in British Guiana" that J.
Gardner Austin, Immigration Agent General of British Guiana was appointed in
1858 to become the colony's agent in China with regard to the recruitment of
plantation workers. During his term he was instrumental in procuring 6934
Chinese indentured labourers. He departed for England on 15th April 1862 in
poor health. His son, Charles W. Austin was employed at Jardine, Matheson
and Co. and also active in the procurement of Chinese labourers. J. Gardiner
Austin became Colonial Secretary of Hong Kong between the years 1868 and
1879.

this one most likely born abt 1807 Bdos) & Thomas Mackintosh POLLARD,
(probably his brother, born Bdos 1789).
George William WELLS (their brother in law, born Bdos 1798, died 1866).

other]
Samuel Brandford TROTMAN, (born abt 1811 Bdos).
Bishop Eastmond FODERINGHAM (born abt 1800 Bdos).
Also noted the name of Jan Vincent MITELHOLZER on the list: quite likely
an
ancestor or relation of the late Guianese novelist Edgar Mitleholzer.
