Heather: Many Thanks for the listing.. am esp. interested in the page 24
picture of the Dutch Policemen. That of Eert Joseph Sloterdijk. He was
married to my Great Aunt Orie Hassell. I have a picture that I think is
Eert but Is not identified.

Will try again to get a interlibrary loan on that book. Do you have a
publish date or company?

Saba is close to Sint Maarten. From Phillipsburg you can see Saba about 22
miles away.

There is a place named Saba Rock which is off St Thomas which is more
than large enough to get off on. It is not like Barrel o Beef. When they
speak of Little Saba if it is as opposed to Saba it might mean there.

Dear Henry Hassell,
My wife's family name is 'Hesle', just wondered if there
might be a connection, they are from Norway and came into
the US via Canada.
A reply would be appreciated.
Thanks,

Doug: I can not say one way or the other. There is some belief that
"Hassell" came originally from the Norwegian area. There was one line that
came from Norway-Sweden over to Canada and then to the Wisconsin. Michigan
area. Others seem to have gotten to the Caribbean by way of the UK/
Scotland as early as 1670.

Anyone else have an idea or comment?

The Islands were the Netherlands Antilles, or West Indies, and they spoke
Dutch or a form of Dutch, al the records are at the Hague, I would say it is
.

Dear Ann,
The official language of the islands Curaçao, Bonaire and Aruba (status
aparte - since 1986 independent from the Netherlands Antilles, but not from
the kingdom of the Netherlands) is dutch. The language of the people is
papiamento. The language of the other islands of the Netherlands Antilles
= dutch part of St. Maarten, Saba and St. Eustatius (Statia) is English.

On Saba and St. Maartin, English is spoken but official records are in
Dutch. Statia is probably the same. and thanks for the name of language
used on the others .

correspondance between Henry Hassell and Hesther Nielsen:
I was away when the thread started. today I loaned a book at the library:
Saban Cottages, watercolors by Heleen Cornet, Saba 1991
Heleen Cornet is a dutch artist who lives on Saba. If anyone is interested I could find out if she still has this book to sell. It shows all the typical houses and a short description about the owners, inhabitants.
Nr. 7 on page 47 shows Sloterdijk's house. The watercolor is now in the possession of Anna B. Johnson
-Eert Sloterdijk, policeman from the province of Frysia in the Netherlands, originally lived in Bunkerhill Collage (page 76). He rented this home with his wife Orie Hassell. Orie lived there for many years after his death.-
Nr. 6 Bunker Hill Cottage page 76 (original watercolor now in the possession of Ruth and Danny Hassell
"Marking the spot where the Fort Bay step road links up with The Bottom's flat road, Bunker Hill was the reception area for pominent visitors who made the climb up from the harbor. The original owner of the house was captain Fred Simmons, master of the schooner Springbird, which carried cattle from the Virgin Islands to the Windwards. ...
For the handsome sum of NAfl 1000 (about US$ 600) the house was purchased by father Matheus Groen as a residence for ...Eert Sloterdijk. In order to marry Orie Hassell, a Saban girl, Eert turned Roman Catholic ....." Christel Monsanto

Yes that is my Great Aunt. When I visited Saba July 1998 a cousin said that
I bore the likeness of Orie in some facial features. Orie and Eert did
visit Baltimore for a few months in the 1920's but it was too cold for her
and she returned to Saba with the family. Eert suffered a Hemorrhage and I
believe was airlifted to Aruba where he died in Oct. 1964 at the age of 71.

I purchased the "Saban Cottage Book" from the Big Rock market several years
ago. The Big rock market on Saba is owned by Orie and Eert 's niece Lucile
and Ronnie Johnson along with their sons.

The family as far as I know were all Roman Catholic and were Baptized in the
RC church in Windwardside.

Orie is buried in the Cemetery just across the street from that church and
just inside of the gate.

I've missed the start of this thread and I cannot pickup on what is the
significance of the name Lett - which is an Irish family that I am
researching with some obscure connections to the West Indies.

Also - has anyone ever heard of the name Wilhellam (Dutch I assume)? My
connection claimed to be from Antigua and also Santa Cruz.

Oh my goodness!! This is crazy and fun all at the same time. I'm a Hassell as well. My grandmother was from Saba too. Her name was Caranetta Hassell, she had two sisters named Margaret and Jeannie. We recently met some of our cousins who are Hazells, when I lived in New York. I also met a cousin of mine who was a professor at the university that I attended, her last name(maiden) is Hileger (not sure if I spelled that right. I know that we also have family in St. Vincent, Curacao, St. Martin, Aruba, Stacia or St. Eustacia and Bermuda.
