Hi!

I am so happy to have joined this list!? I am researching my family members who lived in the Caribbean; Bermuda, Jamaica, San Andres and Old Providencia. I am interested in these people
Gilbert Livingston, born in NY in 1718, moved to Bermuda and in 1748 married Joy Darrell, died in
???????? Bermuda Sept 1789.? Their children were Gilbert, Darrell, Henry, John and Margaret.
Henry Beekman Livingston who was christened Jan 1757, Warwick, Bermuda.
Margaret Livingston who married John Gilbert Perinchief.
Philip Beekman Livingston who married Mary Archbold in Jamaica 1811, lived in Old Providencia where
????? their first three children were born, moved to Jamaica and bought a coffee plantation.? Their
????? children were Philip Beekman Livingston, Jr, Robert Livingston, Mary Livingston, Jasper Hall
??????Livingston (my great great grandfather)?and Lawrence Livingston.? Philip and Mary moved
????? to Ohio where Jasper and Lawrence were going to school.? Mary died in Ohio and Philip moved
??????to Galt, Canada with son, Robert.? His daughter Mary had moved there with her husband,
????? Robert Reid.
Francis Archbold, the father of Mary Archbold, (my g g g grandmother)?lived on Old Providencia?
????? where he was a land owner and a Sea Captain.?????
Mary Livingston, daughter of Philip and Mary married Robert Reid in Jamaica, he was from Scotland
????? and was a dentist.
These are the ancestors I am researching and I could use any and all help I could get.? I would be happy to share the information I have with anyone interested.? Again, thank you for consideration of my request.

San Andres and Old Providence are two of the islands off of Nicaragua
that at the time of your ancestor were under the control of the British
but now belong to Colombia. They were used for catching and processing
fish and turtles and are now a duty free tourism center. Most of the
population are English speaking of Caribbean descent.

Cheryl

St. Lucia is in the Windward Islands north west of Barbados and north
of St. Vincent. It was colonized by the French but they lost the island
to the British during the French Revolution then by treaty in 1815. The
British then established a major naval base there at the port of
Castries.

Further detail on the history and location of St Lucia can be found at the
Caribbean Gen Web site below:

The settlement history of St Lucia, particularly in the 17th century was
very unstable....there are a couple of good historical accounts on the net

The one above is basic...but a decent start if I find the others while
playing sick here today will forward them to the list

I meant to "re-label" my post on 04/11/2007 from "Re: Spam:*****,
Matthew Hatchett" to "Hodges in the Virgin Islands"
K O Kupperman mentions the transportation of the first Africans to Old
Providence in "Providence Island, 1630-1641: the Other Puritan Colony"
(1993). The white Puritans and indentured servants.felt threatened by
the arrival of several hundred slaves, so many of them were transferred
to St Kitts which had a much lower proportion of Africans until sugar
was introduced from Brazil about 1640. The Spanish captured the island
after it became a base for privateers.
I had two or three requests off-list some time ago for a list of the
original English settlers on St Kitts in 1623 (1624 by modern reckoning)
but my notes were in store. Like Thomas Warner, his wife and son, they
were all from Framlingham, Suffolk, England and were mostly merchants:
"William Tasted, John Rhodes, Robert Binns, William Bentfield, Serjeant
Jones, Mr Ware, William Ryle, Rowland Grasscock, Mr Bond, Mr Langley, Mr
Weaver, Serjeant Aplon and a sailor and a cook (both unnamed)"
Warner used the first permanent English settlement in the West Indies as
a base to seed many of their subsequent colonies..
