Does anyone know how I can get information on George Moore, Assistant Commissary-General, West Indies. He was born about 1771 and his son George William Moore (1801 - 30 April 1832) was born at St Pierre, Martinique - George William Moore was listed as a British citizen. George William Moore married Marianne Mortimer (6 Feb 1808 - 29 July 1876) on 30 April 1832 at St Mary's Church, Newington, Surrey, England (her father was Charles Mortimer (born 1873) and mother Mary Jackson) and they emigrated to Adelaide, South Australia. Their grandson, George Augustus Moore built a house at Manly, Sydney, Australia which he named Corunna in honour of Sir John Moore and the family oral history says that Sir John Moore was a great uncle. Sir John Moore was born 1761, and did not have a brother George or a son George as far as I can see. Maybe he had an uncle George, or maybe one of Sir John's brothers had a son George - but then 1771 would be too early, as Sir John and his brothers would all have been aged 10 or less. I would love to find out more about George Moore, Assistant Commissary-General, West Indies - what did an Asssistant Commissary-General do? Are there any records, articles or books I could consult?
Thank you, Greg Matthews

Have you checked the "History of Antigua" yet?

Hi Greg

George Moore is noted in "The Army List of 1829" as Asst Commissary General
commencing 25 Sept 1814 stationed at Barbados. Very likely his sons birth at
Martinique makes sense in light of naval and military developments between
then and the son's birth....

With a little patience and absolute devotion to free genealogy you could
likely google up more on him as I did.....there are a lot of Victorian
publications on online which recorded all sorts of information now useful to
tracking a Victorian in Gov or military service. Just be careful to cross
check . But his material is shadowed heavily by George Moore, the author.

You could pursue the military angle via various Uk sources of which there
are many available. Is this any help?

Thanks Chris, how do I search "The Army List of 1829" - is it on the web or in a book? Does it go into any detail or just mention the officers? Are the Victorian sources you mention on-line? Sorry for the dumb questions, but I am very new to genealogy. Best wishes, Greg

Thanks for your suggestion Jim, is it a book or a website? How do I access it? I am a bit of a novice on the genealogy and I appreciate the help. Best wishes, Greg

I think you're best move would be to read a few good books/websites on
"how to do genealogy" generally and move on to the specifics of the
(geographical) area of your interest. Then you will be in a position to
ask specific and informed questions on sites/list like this.

I am not criticising you but I think you will really find this
beneficial and your research will be so much more enjoyable when you are
doing it largely yourself There are lots of helpful people around, here
and elsewhere, but *some* people like to see plenty of evidence of
"helping yourself" first.

Hi Greg,

I went to Google Books and searched: George Moore + Barbados + army
list 1829 and here is the link:

+Moore+%2B+Barbados+%2B+army+list
+1829&hl=en&sa=X&ei=s8aOUZGaBIqqigKJtoDQBw&sqi=2&ved=0CDYQ6AEwAA#v=onepage&q=George
%20Moore%20%2B%20Barbados%20%2B%20army%20list%201829&f=false>

I also went to the UK National Archives site and did a search :
"George Moore" AND Barbados

I got 3 hits <http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/SearchUI/s/res?
_q=%22George+Moore%22+AND+Barbados&x=41&y=5> Have a look and see what
you think. You can order documents from the archives, but just a
warning that they can be a bit pricey, so make sure it's something
that you really want. In my view, only the first item seems relevant.

Hope this helps,

Cathy

Thanks Jim,
I spent the day going through various records, including the History of Antigua - excellent book - unfortunately the State Library of NSW only has volumes 1 and 3. If there is a Moore family pedigree it would be in volume 2! There were quite a lot of Moore families in the West Indies and several mentions in the History, unfortunately none seemed to line up with the people I am looking for. I am trying to find a birth record for George William Moore born in St Pierre, Martinique so that I can find out who his parents were. Martinique seems difficult due to its changing ownership - would there be 1801 records still in Martinique, or would they have been moved to Anigua or elsewhere in the West Indies, or would they have gone back to England? I may be on a wild goose chase here, but I would like to exhaust all possibilities. Best wishes, Greg

There is no Moore pedigree in Volume 2 in alphabetical order, nor is
there a George in the Index.

Here is the Index snippet attached, let me know if there is something
specific you would like to have.

Best, Jim

Hi Greg,

Martinique records are available at <http://
anom.archivesnationales.culture.gouv.fr/caomec2/> Click on "choisir
une territoire", then choose Martinique. Saint Pierre is available -
there is Saint Pierre Le Mouillage (area around the harbour) and Saint
Pierre Le Fort. Since you seem to have an exact date, it should be
easy to find.
