IF Christmas wrappings will get out of my hair and onto the packages, I
can continue..............
somehow I end up with more of the tape and bows on me than on the
presents. And I ain't got no fruitcake to blame it on!
I do want to thank you all at this time for the friendships, the shared
information, the kooky stories, and laughter. And hoping
that in the New Year, King Cod will invite us all over for a West Indian
dinner!
Peace to ya' all,
Cindy
(Paul - the papers are in Worcester, Massachusetts - where are you?)
Thanks for this bagatelle. On that Drewry Ottley, I had the date, April
12, 1822, but not the place, London. Thanks a lot. Kennedy is also in
the Ottley line, so I'll have to check this one out.
Happy Holidays to you and yours, and to the Listbuds.

In some coastal states of yore, the fresh meat was not particularly
plentiful around Christmas and so it was the tradition to indulge the
ravenous appetites of the village with what was called "The Christmas Cod"
this being a highly improved and somewhat elaborately disguised piece of
salt fish of the species "Codfish Oceanus" Now as you know salt Cod can be
good or it can be bad and for nearly three hundred years the worst salt cod
in Nova Scotia (Grade D or equivalent) was sent to the West Indies.
Nevertheless salt cod is still a favorite if for nothing else than fish
puddings or fish balls. I suppose people remain sentimental about tradition
regardless of the root cause of said tradition.......
Having been closely associated with both salt water and "Codfish Oceanus"
since birth, and being interested lately in the West Indies due to some odd
birth there in the 17th century which in some indirect manner might have
been facilitated by the diligent use of grade D or worse Salt fish . I
thought it only right with all this happy chat about puddings and such to
bring forth the lowly " Christmas Cod" for your remembrance. After all
without it many an indentured man or woman or poor free born fisherman of
the Atlantic or Caribbean would likely have had little but hard tack and
corn pudding to sustain them on Christmas.( I suppose they could find plenty
of green cane liquor)
Anyway, let's not forget the lowly Cod as we settle into our Gluttonizing
and worshipfull consumption of those brown skinned fowl or rich ribbed
Beasts of the field .... Gravies and stuffing are fine but what of the
romance(and utility) of the Sea?
And afterwards what difference can there be between Christmas Cod and Fowl
or Beast?
A soup or chowder yields the next day's feast
Anyway, this parable is ended and I beg my leave
Forget not the lowly Cod, King of Christmas near the Sea.
(unless you've had salt hay lamb in Mt. St. Michel):)
A Warm Holiday to each and every One
Merry Christmas May you find Peace
Chris Cod

Season's Greeting and Happy New Year to you and yours.
I wasn't going to get involved in anything until after the holidays.
However, can't resist adding a little to the easy one's of Cindy's
Christmas Bagatelles. There is a little calm before the storm!
