1638 List of Barbados settlers (Waters or Waterman?)
Christie Brown
I have seen this list with "Humphrey Waters" on it before. Don't you (or
do you) think it possible that this was a mistranscription of Humphrey
Waterman, my ancestor? We know he was on the island well before his death
in 1666. It would be quite a coincidence if there were both a "Humphrey
Waters" and a "Humphrey Waterman."
Can anyone comment on the frequency of such errors in early documents?

Christie:
Can't comment on the Frequency, but know for certain of another "error" or
misspelling at any rate which effects the first name in the "C" column which
should read "Consett" not "Consat" this of course is a phonetic spelling,
so is easily explained, but there are probably others. To make such a
determination you'd probably have to track back to the original document if
possible.(and so see if it was simply illegible or too fancy a script or
what)
