A note in Burke's peerage:
"Capt. James Salmond, b. in Antigua 1694; m Lydia, daugh. of J. Hanson Esq. and by her (b. 1701, d. 24 April 1748) had two children, William, of whom presently; and Mary, d unm. Capt. Salmond lived for a time on his estates at Seaforth, in Antigua, and afterward joined the royal forces under the Duke of Marlborough. He d. 1 Oct 1746. His son, William Salmond, Esq., b 4 Aug 1737; m 1st 22 Aug 1759. Eilzabeth daugh of J. Chalmers, Esq. of Edinburgh, and by her (who d. 18 July, 1760) had one child, Euphemia, b. 7 June 1760 . . .

I found a reference later on (1860?) that the family were of French origin and left during the Huguenot persecutions.
