The first group might interest the Ottley researchers; second group is my
family and I am trying to find more about Wesley Horsford who I believe
worked for a Trinidad newspaper. Editor? before his early death. Anyone
know anything about the Horsford family?
Thanks

Dear Heather:

During my research in Dominica, I have discovered the following
HORSFORDS:

Elwin HORSFORD born about 1875-1938. Not sure where he came from or
whether he was the father of:
Lenard HORSFORD born about 1900 in Roseau, Dominica, and the father of:
Enson HORSFORD born about 1935 in Roseau, Dominica, and married to
Stephanie JOSEPH.

If you able to shed light on any of the above information as to the
origination of the HORSFORDS, please let me know.

Thank you.

Anthony Joseph.

Reply to Anthony Joseph,
These are all the Horsfords I have on my database. They certainly
originated in England and below I copy two bits of info I have on them.
Unfortunately I have not been able to connect many of them.
I know nothing of the four Dominican Horsfords you sent.

Heather UK

These are the notes I have for Paul Horsford 1771:

Buried in St. John's Cathedral, Antigua. Located South Wall.
Plaque states - sacred to the memory of the Hon. Paul Horsford, a member of
her Majesty's Council, and who for a series of years filled successively
the important offices of Speaker of the House of Assembly/ Solicitor
General, Attorney General, and Chief Justice of this island. he departed
this life on the 16th April AD 1850 aged 79 years. His mortal remains lie
interred within the burial grounds of this Cathedral in the vault of the
Warner Family wherein also repose the ashes of a sister, and of two of his
brothers. This tablet has been erected by the surviving daughter and two
sons of the deceased as an unpretending tribute of respect and effection to
the memory of the best of fathers, and as a lasting record of their
bereavement.
1787 - states he was Deputy Registrar of Antigua
1823 - states Attorney General of the Island of Antigua
Sept 20, 1836 - states Chief Justice of the Island of Antigua and
Montserrat.

Notes for Robert Marsh Horsford

1852 he became Knight Bachelor, C.B. He was the eldest son of The Hon. Paul
Horsford, late Chief Justice of Antigua. He was educated at Winchester and
Exeter College, Oxford, BA.
1825-46 Solicitor General of Antigua
1846-Nov 1847 Attorney General
Nov 1847 - August 1856 Chief Justice until he retired.
PRO Box CO.7.No.86 states 20th Jan 1847, Sir R.Horsford about to go on
leave.
PRO Box CO.7.No.87 states Sir Robert Horsford was on 25th Sept.1847
recommended to fill vacancy after death of Chief Justice Shiell.
15th Dec 1847 states Sir Robert Horsford was made vice Attorney General in
Antigua with I.W.Sheriff as Attorney General.

Heather,

Now that I have sent you a letter with questions, your second letter comes. I
have found the Jane Ottley you mentioned listed in the Ottley Pedigree in the
book THE HISTORY OF ANTIGUA by Oliver (1896), see page 374. She was the
daughter of Thomas Ottley (1744-1804) of Antigua. I believe these were the
English or Scottish Ottleys at that time. She married 1st 1795, V.H. Horsford,
Esq., and 2ndly James, 3rd Marquess of Thomond; she died 8 Sep. 1843 and was
bur. at Westonsuper-Mare. No children were listed in this report. However,
you do have one son listed, Thomas Fahie Horsford, who died in 1872.

No connection is mentioned here to Wesley Horsford, but maybe the same source
may have information on Wesley. I don't know where you got your information on
the Horsfords in Antigua, but the gentry in those days travelled quite a bit
between the islands, and between England and the Caribbean, almost as if they
had planes, at least from the genealogy of the Ottleys in the Caribbean, that
is a fact. So Wesley may have left Antigua and travelled south, as did the
Ottleys where they served as Presidents and Chief Justices of St. Vincent,
Grenada, and actually Richard Ottley (1782-1845) was knighted and served as
President of Ceylon (as if it were around the corner) back in the late 1700s
and 1800s.

You mentioned that Paul Horsford and some family members are buried in the
vault of the Warner family in Antigua. By the way, the Ottleys also have
Warners in their line back then in Antigua. Richard Ottley (1730-1775)
married Elizabeth Warner (1735-1768), the daughter of Ashton Warner, Esq.
These Ottleys (grandparents of Sir Richard Ottley) were the one who owned
estates in St. Vincent and Tobago, and probably from which our line comes. I
guess in more than one way our ancestors were connected.

Let me know what you find.

Jennifer,

There are no Sheppards nor Hewlitts in our tree so far; there are Roberts,
and Taylors, Youngs, Willets, Bickerstiths, Franklins, St. Cyrs and a whole
bunch of other names. There is the Ottley Plantation Inn (now a 4* hotel)
in St. Kitts where the first Ottleys landed we believe in the 1600s, and
then there are Ottley Streets in many of the islands, and some sort of
Ottley beach or town in either St. Kitts or Nevis or Antigua, don't remember
where I saw it on a map. There are presently in the Caribbean Ottleys in
St. Kitts, Nevis, St. Johns, St. Thomas, St. Croix, Antigua, St. Vincent,
Grenada, Tobago and Trinidad. Of course there are literally hundreds maybe
more from these Caribbean Ottleys here in the USA. We had a small reunion
with 51 in our home here in the Washington, D. C. area on New Year's day,
and since then have discovered 4 more families in this area alone--and we
are related!!!

Thanks, Jennifer. Keep the thoughts coming. Some do lead somewhere.
