Does anybody connect to to following family, or know
anything of them?
George NEDHAM, (my 6th Great-Grandfather) of St
Thomas-in-the-Vale & St Catherine's, Jamaica (b.Denbigh,
Wales) was a Col. in the Army & Speaker of the House of
Assembly, Jamaica 1688; died 1703/4 Jamaica & was buried
Spanish Town Cathedral; married Mary BYAM & their children
all born Jamaica were:
1) Mary NEDHAM,
2) Robert NEDHAM, b. 1672, of Spanish Town
3) William NEDHAM (1675-1746), of Mt Olive, Jamaica (m.
Olivia HAMPSON)
4) Elizabeth Grace NEDHAM, m. Col. John ELLIS
5) Henry NEDHAM, 1681-1757
6) Edward Winter NEDHAM, 1683-1722
I understand they had plantations in Jamaica, but don't
know what sort, coffee? Would like to be able to catch up
with any descendants.

I must have missed the thread....what was the topic? The Byams were pals of
the Cods on Antigua...part of the Planters Club so to speak. Were occasional
leasees of portions of Barbuda, held several plantations, and various
elected positions and or appointments in Gov.
Please clarify what is being discussed re Neham/Byam/ Jamaica...
My observation Byams may have had interests in Jamaica at various times but
have not researched it seriously.

But here's a George Nedham reference that seemed to be reasonable:
Caribbeana IVp335:
KNOLLYS OF JAMAICA
(Will) Fra. Knollys of the I. of J., mercht. Will dated 17 Nov. 28 Chas II.,
1676. Bound to sea. All estate to my brother Wm. K. of J., and iof he die before
me to my two nephews Willoughny and Edwd Byam. Said brother to be Ex'or. Wit. by
Geo. Nedham, H. Toulson. Sworn by G. Nedham 28 Sept. 1677 before "Vaughan".
Recorded in Libro2, fo. 187.

I'm also interested in the BYAM family -- however, from Antigua, not
Jamaica. Trying to trace my DUNDAS ancestors and found a Major William
DUNDAS who married Mary Gunthorpe BYAM on January 8, 1771 in St. George's
Parish, Antigua. Mary Gunthorpe BYAM was the daughter of Henry BYAM and
Hester Gunthorpe. Was looking at this information some months ago and have
not had time to organize material but seems to me I drew the conclusion that
the BYAM family was from Bath, England.
Anyone have additional information on William and Mary Byam DUNDAS -- such
as offspring?
Sincerely,
Lisa Goad
P.S. Have several other BYAM (Antigua) marriages from LDS records if anyone
is interested, however, for the most part, I believe you can find the same
information by accessing the LDS website.

I don't have specifics on William and Mary B Dundas but you are correct
about the Bath location regarding the Byams...also Bristol
A William Byam who was an associate of one of the Christopher Cods and
friend of Sir William did some genealogy on various West Indian planter
families to restore what he thought was an unjust tendency on the part of
resident Britons to demean and disparage the birthright and bloodlines of
many colonials.
His introduction (which I have only in his handwriting) is very interesting
as it provides some insight into how many of the people who went out to the
Indies felt they were belittled by those who stayed at home.... and it
reveals their fierce desire to be seen as legitimate and to have their lines
restored.
Anyway, this a digression sorry

Thanks for the reference to G. Nedham as a witness to
Francis Knollys' will, which was very interesting. Yes, that
would have been George, as his wife Mary Byam would have
been a
niece of Francis Knollys, & the Willoughby & Edward
Byams mentioned would have been her brothers.
You mentioned there is reference to other Nedhams in
Caribbeana. I would say these would all have belonged to our
family, as Nedham (also spelt Needham) wouldn't have been a
common name
in Jamaica. I understand they had large estates there
Regarding the Byams, these were of Antigua. Mary Byam (my 6
Gts-Grandmother) was the daughter of William Byam of Antigua
(former Governor of Surinam) & Dorothy Knollys.

(1744-1804) married Grace Johnson Byam, only daughter of Rev.Francis Byam
and Jane Warner (according to V.L. Oliver in History of Antigua......).
