[Carib] 1937-1948 reminiscence project - search for American contributors

(Not for the first time) Thank you so much for your support and
encouragement.
Our current research reveals events and changes in the British West Indies/
Caribbean from 1937-1948 through eye-witness accounts and supporting
sources. At the moment the emphasis is finding contributors and, if they are
willing, documenting/recording their first-hand testimonies.
We welcome any advice/assistance in inviting contributions from Americans
with reminiscences of experiences in the Caribbean between 1937 and 1948,
whether in the armed forces or as civilians (eg. As tourists, construction
workers, oil workers...). One of the Black Army units in Trinidad, gave
themselves the nick-name, 'The Red diamond Boys': we would love to find any
surviving members or include contributions from relatives.
We have made substantial progress in gathering reminiscences to deal with
two main themes: the people 's story - seen through reminiscences of every
level of British West Indian society. And the war story - seen through the
perspectives of wartime civilians, merchant sailors, Navy men... We have
even interviewed two of the last surviving German submariners who fought in
the Caribbean. (NB. Ernest Wiltshire was a massive help with advice and
introductions for interviews in Barbados and Trinidad last year).
So far, however, we have obtained very few contributions from Americans, and
none from African American veterans. (NB. In our treatment, Trinidad is an
important location for both of these themes)
Our US searches for possible contributors, have included messages explaining
the project and inviting reminiscences, to historical societies, newspaper
associations, Radio stations, public libraries... As well as the various
veterans' associations and forums. A few of the historical societies have
passed on our information, but I think the messages to the other contacts
have either been filed in the trash, or been lost in already packed
in-boxes.
If you are able, to help (and remember, just letting us have your thoughts
will be much appreciated) let us know what you need and you'll have it.
