Hello,

Could someone please help me with the translation of a birth
certificate from Latin into English? I know what the Latin text
means but I am looking for a "good" translation as English
is not my native language.

[latin]
Anno Domini 1899 die 9 decembris baptizatus et 7 hujus natus est
hora 11 vespertina Carolus, filius Felici Verkist ex Heverle
et Philomene Kaye ex hoc et in hac junctorum.
Susceptores Carolus Verkist et Adelia Gilliard.

Quod attetor J.E. Van Gucht, paroch.

[english]
...

Thanks in advance
Bruno Verkist

Bruno,
They threw me out of Latin classes after three months, so I'm
afraid I can't help myself. :-) However there is a good beginners
guide to Latin sold at the Family Records Centre in London which
may be what you need. As you are in Germany you probably don't
drop in there very often, but you may have someone who can get it
for you????

In the Year of Our Lord 1899, Charles , the son of Felix Verkist of
Heverle and Philomena Kay of the same place, and who were also married
there, was born on 7th December and baptized on 9th December.
Witnessed by Charles Verkist and Adelia Gilliard. Attested to by
J.E.Van Gucht, parish priest.

The reference to the time (hora 11 vespertina) would appear to be
11:00 and is presumably the time of the boy's baptism.

Naturally you can substitute a more suitable local name for Charles,
such as Carl or Karl. Also, Susceptores can also mean Godparents.

That's OK Bruno, but I haven't done a serious latin translation for
some years and enjoyed the exercise.
