Mark, In "Irish Pedigrees" there is mention of "O'Dinan or Downing" in
regards to being a chief of lands in LIMERICK and TIPPERARY. However under
the DINAN pedigree it does not give the name DOWNING as being one of the
anglicised variations of DINAN.
The book also lists an Ed. Downing in Corcoran's Irish Legion of New York
during the Civil War, who was never mustered and was discharged as a sergeant.
So I'm afraid you CANNOT enter any Irish pub and partake of poteen until
this matter is cleared up and you have received full accreditation from the
Dublin Publican Association. But I guess you can celebrate St. Patrick's Day
just the same as long
as you keep it quiet and low key. April 1, 1996
