RUSSELL ROGERS RUNS FOR EUROPE.
Russell Rogers is the official candidate for the Robin Hood Group
Independent forum
Russell Rogers is 57 years of age and is a Widower with two sons. Born
and educated in Nottinghamshire, he lives in a quiet village in the
same county and is a marketing consultant having spent nearly thirty
years in the profession, servicing many national and
internationally-known clients. This was after his early career as a
professional footballer ended prematurely due to injury.
Russell is passionate about the state of the country and believes as
an Independent, he can make policy judgements based on sound logic and
common sense instead of being influenced by the constraints of being
tied to any particular party.
His interests outside of work and family are football and horse
racing.

June 10th 2004 Independent Day
On many issues - from the war in Iraq to the closed list voting system
- party politics has failed us. The voters in the East Midland Region
have a unique opportunity, on polling day, to strike a blow against
politics as usual , and compel those who practise it to take notice
of the will of the people.
Will an MEP outside the party system be marginalised in Brussels and
Strasbourg? It didn t happen to Martin Bell when he was elected to the
House of Parliament. Since no English Independent has ever been
elected to the European Parliament, no one can know the outcome. What
we do know is that we have it in our power to make electoral history.
We are not so far outside the mainstream as to be unable to affect it.
. This is a word-of-mouth, grass-roots insurrection that will
challenge party politics in the one place that really matters the
ballot box.
It is a campaign that, I believe, will appeal especially to the
independent-minded, to democrats throughout the region and to
first-time voters. We have a rare opportunity to defeat the list
system, challenge the status quo, elect an Independent and discover
for ourselves that politics can also be the art of the impossible.
A Campaign for Democracy
I am a passionate believer in democracy and honest politics. It is in
these causes that I am standing as an Independent for the East
Midland Region for the European Parliament in 2004. I believe in a
democracy that serves national and local needs rather than party
interests.
The present electoral system doesn t do that. It lists the candidates
in the parties rather than the voters order of preference. It
drastically dilutes the constituency link which has, till now, been
the bedrock of our parliamentary democracy. European politics is a
mystery. Few people know who their MEPs are. Who, for instance,
represents the East Midlands in Brussels and Strasbourg? Most voters
neither know nor care. They feel powerless and disenfranchised. It is
no wonder that the turnout in the last Euro-election was a dismal 24%.
We can and we shall do better. We expect a higher turnout in the East
Midland Region than anywhere else in the country. The political
parties should welcome that. We can make a real difference here. The
voters may like to be represented in Europe by someone they know and
local to the regions.

A MESSAGE FROM TONY EGGINGTON
INDEPENDENT EXECUTIVE MAYOR
Mansfield District Council
Having had the privilege of knowing Russell for many years, it gives
me the greatest pleasure in endorsing him as the official Independent
candidate. Having shared our passion for sport together in our teens,
we now share the same beliefs of honest open politics. We are governed
by an outdated political system that puts party dogma before people.
Russell will use all his endeavours to put people first and is well
capable of looking after the interest of Britain and the East
Midlands. Russell is a man of integrity, vision and honesty. Please
support him for Europe.
Tony Egginton, Mansfield's own first directly elected mayor, intends
to ensure that all Council Services match public expectation in
dealing with issues that concern them most.
Tony's aim to take politics out of Local Government, encouraged local
independent people to successfully stand for election. His agenda to
cut wastage of resources from the Council, started with the disposal
of the Civic limousine.
Town Centre regeneration is another important feature of his desire to
improve the social and economic environment for the people of
Mansfield.
Tony's "hands on" approach and "open door" policy means that he can be
instantly recognised by the people of Mansfield, who have adopted him
as their champion.
We now have the opportunity to take these beliefs in sound common
sense to a wider field.
