I have a small problem. My maps of Great Britain do not show the location of
the community of Sockburn. I have been given both Durham and Yorkshire as the
site of this community and would like to get a difinitive answer. If there is
a web site similar to the Canadian Geographical Name Server, I could do the
look-up myself.

When I checked this on a recent map I can see why you have been given both
counties as the location. Sockburn is a small village on the end of what
appears to be a road that goes nowhere but Sockburn. It is about 5 miles
S-E of Darlington and according to my map is in the county of Durham but
is almost totally surrounded by North Yorkshire - it is in a loop of the
river Tees and just on the North side of the river hence I guess that the
river was used as the boundary for Durham. To the S is Northallerton, to
the W is Richmond and to the NE is Middlesborough.

Sockburn is a few miles South East of Darlington it seems to be very much
astride the border so much so one of my atlases doesn't make it clear which
county it is in, another has it in the same place but the index says
Northumberland which is impossible.
